Nestled within the charming knolls of historic Angus County, Dundee features plenty of cultural destinations that epitomize Scotland’s heritage. World-famous golf courses abound around the city, as do ancient villages and castles. Many visitors trek up the awe-inspiring Glen Cova to see the region’s splendid fauna and flora. The lovely Firth of Tay flows along Dundee’s southern border, which grants outstanding views of the North Sea and the countless ships that emerge from it every day. But the city itself possesses an innumerable array of places to visit that will excite the imagination. Just a short drive away from the hotel resides the exhilarating Camperdown Country Park, and its stately manor, wildlife center, and fairway. Camperdown Country Park
Camperdown Country Park resides on the grounds of a former 19th century mansion, which the City of Dundee acquired at the end of World War II. The park covers an area of over 400 acres, making it the largest in the area. It features many attractions, including a popular wildlife center and golf course. The original manor home, the Camperdown House, still occupies the grounds as a Category A listed building.
Dundee Repertory Theater
For almost a century, the Dundee Repertory Theater has hosted numerous theatrical performances before thousands of visitors. The theater holds the distinction of being home to the Dundee Rep Ensemble, Scotland’s only permanent company of actors, as well as the Scottish Dance Theatre. Guests should take every opportunity to catch a show at this iconic Scottish theater.
Mill Observatory
Dundee has some of the best places to watch the night sky in all of Scotland. The Mill Observatory is one such destination. Founded in 1935, it has shown visitors the cosmos through its original Victorian-era telescope. Visitors can also see the observatory’s planetarium from March to October, which hosts amazing displays of the solar system, the constellations, and the galaxy as a whole.
McManus Art Gallery and Museum
Since 1867, the McManus has been at the heart of Dundee’s vibrant art scene. This magnificent venue features eight unique gallery spaces that display over 400 million years of artwork, artifacts, and fossils. In addition to the permanent exhibitions, the McManus also provides many interesting programs that change frequently throughout the year.
Discovery Point and the RRS Discovery
In 1901, a wooden, three-mast ship named the Discovery sailed on its maiden voyage to Antarctica. The Discovery was the last ship of its kind in the United Kingdom, constructed at one of Dundee’s busy shipyards. The ship successfully ferried its crew to Antarctica, becoming part of the first successful expedition to the continent. It is now part of Discovery Point, a museum in downtown Dundee that is dedicated to the famous trip.
V&A Dundee
This wonderful museum opened recently in 2018 to great praise. A labor of love that took nearly ten years to complete, the V&A Dundee is the first international design museum in the United Kingdom located outside of London. The museum celebrates Scotland’s rich design heritage.
Broughty Castle
A national Scottish landmark since 1981, Broughty Castle has long stood as an icon in Dundee. The fortress was first erected in the 1400s to protect against the threat of possible invasions from the sea. Today, the Broughty Castle is a lovely museum that chronicles the history of the site, the surrounding area, and the people who have lived near it for centuries.
Glamis Castle
Just north of Hotel Dundee is the illustrious Glamis Castle, a medieval stronghold that has borne witness to a millennium of Scottish history. Over the years, it has been the home for the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne, as well as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Glamis Castle even served as the setting for William Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth. No holiday in Dundee is complete without a trip to Glamis Castle.
Golf
Golf has occupied a place of eminence within Scottish culture for many centuries. To this day, countless individuals travel to Scotland to appreciate the magnificence of the country’s storied fairways. Dundee in particular is very close to several legendary golf courses, including Carnoustie Golf Links and St. Andrews Golf Club. The site of numerous professional tournaments, both Carnoustie and St. Andrews possess some of the most historic greens in Scotland.
