For a feel of southern gentility with a touch of German influence French Lick Resort and the West Baden Hotel are worthy of your attention. Spring, summer and fall allow for more outdoor activities but cooler winter weather provides time to enjoy indoor swimming, bowling, the arcade, fitness center, casino and boutique shopping. The grounds are vast, 3,000 acres, set in the Hoosier National Forest. It invites walks, bike riding, garden walk, sand volleyball, croquet, horseback riding plus two 18 hole and a 9 hole golf course. Each hotel has an indoor and outdoor pool. Organized activities for children are available. Horse drawn carriages, shuttles and a trolley transport guests between the hotels and casino.
In 1812 Fort French Lick was established, named after the natural mineral salt licks which drew buffalo, deer and other wildlife. The West Baden Springs Hotel opened in 1855 but was damaged by fire. Afterwards the Dome, with its 200 foot diameter atrium was built. The mineral springs attracted Franklin D. Roosevelt and being only 230 miles from Chicago Al Capone visited. Over the years it fell into disrepair. In 1994 a group of investors bought both hotels, restored them with $500M and reopened in 2006. Today it is a National Historic Landmark.
Staff at the restaurants, desk, housekeeping, casino and valet are congenial in the southern tradition, politeness is contagious. Laid back and relaxed are the catch phrases. Dining options range from casual; coffee shops, pizza parlor, pubs, poolside, candy and ice cream shops, casino cafe to buffet and ultra fine dining. West Baden town shops and restaurants are within walking distance. If you don't return you will want to.

Outstanding property! I had unbelievable service at the front desk. Thank you! Gabby Archer in the spa area went above and beyond to make sure my service was exceptional. I was very grateful for her patient and expertise. Outstanding service and employees!

What a beautiful property. It is away from the world and on such a large estate its like your in your own world. The Atrium is just gorgeous. The grounds are just beautiful to take a stroll. They have a Golf Course and Winery down the street. They have concerts there too. You can also take the train for dinner. it is in the Forest so really nice place to stay

  • Interesting history

Stayed here as a 2 family group with tweens and teens. We had a good time with the pool, arcade, stable, and bowling alley, once we realized/accepted that this is one of those resort environments where the cost/value ratio is really unbalanced, for instance, $18 cocktails and $120 dinner in a pub where the food rolls straight off the Sysco truck and into the fryer. The trolley drivers are fabulous though, and will take you a short distance off property, which helps expand options. There are also a few restaurants within walking distance. We walked to Denny's for breakfast vs the $24 hotel buffet. The roll away beds are too short for adults/teens, but fine for little kids. It was nice to see the property, but I don't think we'll be back.

  • Girls trip

Have been coming here for years and still enjoy every trip. Spa is great, skeet shooting has a wonderful setup, horseback riding through the woods is fun. I have taken advantage of so many amenities and still have not come
Close to doing them all. The attached casino is always a great time. Food is wonderful, conference rooms are great, hotel rooms are very nice and employees are very friendly. I love spending time here!
