Ballyvaughan is located in a region of distinctive beauty, historic ruins, and inspiring wilderness. Lahinch, Doonbeg, and Gort Golf Clubs, and the spectacular Cliffs of Moher, are all nearby. The Burren is an excellent location for walking and cycling and has many marked routes.
The Burren Centre
In the village of Kilfenora, The Burren Centre gives the visitor an introduction to the visual delights and ancient mysteries which await to be discovered in this unspoiled corner of Ireland. For bird watchers and those interested in natural history and geology, the Burren showcases some of the best limestone pavements and rare flowers in the world. Burren Eco-Tourism and Guided Walk programs are available for a nominal fee. Open daily from mid-March until mid-October.
The Cliffs of Moher
The most dramatic cliffs in Europe (250 metres) and home to a myriad of wildlife, many different species of birds, dolphins and the occasional whale. Beautiful views towards the Aran Islands and Conemara. There is a long cliff side walk for those who wish to brave the brisk Atlantic breeze. A new visitor centre "Atlantic Edge" opened in February 2007. Cliffs of Moher Cruises have daily 1 hour boat trips under the cliffs from Doolin and Liscannor piers. On your way back to the hotel, take the scenic coastal road to Ballyvaughan via Black Head.
Gragan Castle
A tower house built sometime between the 14th and 15th centuries. A half day’s guided walk on The Burren and Gragan Castle can be arranged by the hotel.
Cliffs of Moher and Vistors’ Centre
Part of a more accessible part of the Burren are the awe-inspiring Cliffs of Moher. Shrouded in mists and rising to heights of 650 feet/200 meters, the sheer drop of the cliff faces and the layers of limestone and shale are home to several sea bird species. The nearby Visitors Centre – recently opened in 2007 – provides ample information on the region, as well as light snacks and a gift shop. The Visitors Centre is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (hours vary slightly depending on the season).
Aillwee Cave
The Burren is mainly made up of porous limestone and, over hundreds of years, water has penetrated to the lower strata and formed many underground caves and chambers. One of thousands of such caves in the Burren region, the Aillwee Cave is the only limestone cave open for public viewing. Open daily from January to October from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Visits in November or December need to be prearranged.
Poulnabrone Dolmen
Traveling down the curvey R480 from Ballyvaughan, guests will find this prehistoric portal tomb which dates to about 2500-2000 B.C.
