  • Lovely Historic Hotel with a few issues

    The Hawthorne is one of the Historic Hotels of America and history is alive in their beautiful lobby. We traveled to Salem to attend a family function and the location was perfect....if the weather is nice this hotel would be within walking distance of most tourist sites and restaurants. Our room was spacious (we were given an upgrade .... not sure why) but we did encounter a few problems. The bathroom is quite tiny which was not an issue for me but could be for some people BUT the huge window in the bathroom (the length of the room including the tub!) is not insulated which made for a very chilly shower. A very thin shower curtain covered the window but really did nothing to prevent REALLY cold outside air coming right into the tub. I put towels along a ledge to block it and that helped. The other big issue I had was extremely uncomfortable pillows....all of them.....some people just do not like down items....if there's more than one pillow, having a choice of different types of pillows would be thoughtful. There's no coffee maker or refrigerator in the room but there was morning coffee/tea in the lobby....I did miss having my own cup of tea at night. As we only were staying one night, I did not mention anything to the front desk.....if I were staying longer, I probably would have because everyone I met there was very professional and helpful ....I'm sure they would have tried to remedy the situation. Had no time to dine at the restaurant ....did try to have a drink at the bar but it was packed on a Saturday night. I do love historic hotels and do realize there is a challenge in keeping things up to date....I also really appreciate that the hotel is still there and would go back!

  • Great location

    We came to visit the Peabody Essex Museum which is a few steps away. This hotel is clean and well managed. As it is an old hotel, rooms are a bit small but more than adequate. Free coffee in the lobby is available starting at 5:30 AM.

    We will be back again.

  • Best customer service!

    Not only do we adore this hotel- they have FANTASTIC customer service. I am planning my family's second trip to the Hawthorne Hotel, and I spoke with a woman named Paige who was the absolute best! She was so patient with my million questions and was so helpful and informative. Also, on our last trip, the people working the front desk knew EVERYTHING. They were such a resource. Can't say enough good things about this place and the people who work here.

  • Rich in History & Culture

    Hotel Lobby is beautiful and filled with history! Loved reading all the information around the hotel and on the walls. Wren and Brynn were extremely helpful when checking in and on giving us local traveler information. I hadn't seen the room yet (we booked on Groupon) and I asked to upgrade to two double beds (we had booked a room with one queen). I was charged $20 for the upgrade but it was well worth it. We were on the third floor and the rooms are typical of the New England charm. It is an older hotel, so don't expect new decor. Our room had a bathroom with sink on one side of the room and the shower on the other behind a closed door, but it was fine. Housekeeping was extremely accommodating when we asked for another set of toiletries. During early morning you can get hot coffee, tea,or hot chocolate outside Nathaniel's restaurant (on the other side of the lobby) and in the afternoon, you can get water or hot cider! This was quite nice since there aren't any coffee makers in the room. Tavern On The Green Restaurant off the lobby had a varied menu selection. We had the crab cake sliders and their seafood chowder and they were delicious! Our lunch server/bartender Matt was quite helpful in our food choices. The winter margarita was also quite good! We ate there again at night and had their nachos for a snack...also A+! Our server/bartender, Allison, came and talked with us before we left. It was late and there were only two other guests there besides my sister and me, and she was very sweet and accommodating. She offered us coffee or tea to take up to our room (no charge) before we left. We only stayed one night, so we had breakfast in Nathaniel's restaurant. It was awesome and beautifully plated as well. This hotel is so close to all the tourist attractions that were within walking distance. Since it was off season, the hotel wasn't that crowded and it was very nice! We plan on going again!

    Wonderful service from Jonathan, our waiter. Excellent food and drinks for family birthday celebration! Live music was an added bonus of the evening. Chef prepared delicious fried shrimp that were not even on the menu!
