  • Turn of the Century Afternoon Lunch

by michaelbosse on 2019-07-12 09:51 am

On a family trip we had decided to visit the Peabody Essex Museum but wanted to find a location for lunch. We selected the Hawthorn Hotel which has an exquisite oak paneled bar/restaurant. The menu had a wide variety of seafood and meat dishes that everyone could find a choice. The service was pleasant and prompt; the best asset is the ambiance of the room - lots of turn-of-the-century charm yet appealing to modern tastes.. I have eaten here before and have never been disappointed. A great place to try if you are visiting Salem and its location is right on the Common so it is convenient for most of the tourist attractions there.

  • Nice, old, quaint hotel near restaurants, shopping and the waterfront

    by Heidi28105 on 2019-07-09 05:21 am

I stayed here while in town for business. The hotel is a neat, old, quaint boutique hotel which I like a lot better than the chains. It has two good restaurants in it which I also like to have when traveling. The room is old with a smaller bathroom but that's fine with me. It's within walking distance of shopping, restaurants, and the waterfront. The Salem Witch museum is located a block away.

  • Great location, clean rooms

    by Sandra S on 2019-07-08 09:45 am

we arrived early and were able to check in easily. We did get a king room on the 5th floor- very small room, however i should have booked a different room. The staff was informative with places to see etc. I loaded our cart with the luggage and struggled to get it in the door wondering why no one helped, but again i could have asked.. the location was perfect!! We did not use our vehicle the 3 days that we stayed and that is a huge plus for us. We did visit the tavern there 1 night , however there was a large party and we did not seem to be noticed so I cannot comment on anything there. If we ever get the chance to come back to Salem, this will be the place to stay!!

  • Historic hotel with cutting-edge food

by MorleyMcNeal on 2019-07-08 08:04 am

My family has been coming to Salem for years. Our visits are much more enjoyable now that we've discovered the Hawthorne Hotel: it's right down the block from a stop on the trolley for easy access to the Salem Willows, but also within walking distance of the commuter rail, the Peabody Essex Museum and the Fourth of July fireworks. Other hotels in Salem had underwhelmed us with high prices and limited amenities, not to mention horrendous customer service (what kind of server corrects your pronunciation, and why did it take over thirty minutes to check in, unnamed other Salem hotels?!). We were about to give up on Salem as a vacation destination when we suddenly thought we should at least check on the prices at the Hawthorne Hotel. From the beautiful exterior and lush lobby I'd assumed it would be way out of our price range but it's actually very reasonably priced, and an incredible deal for the level of comfort and service. I feel so welcome there and have already booked a stay for a year from now.

One thing I'd particularly like to highlight: they've just redone the menus in the restaurants, as of this writing, and there are lots of great options. A full selection of kid-appropriate options, lots of gluten-free and vegetarian items and very nicely composed salads, sandwiches and larger plates.

  • If You Like Historic, This Place Is For You!

by martiniski on 2019-07-04 06:20 pm

Historic Hotel with a great location, helpful staff, and updated accommodations while maintaining historic details. Had the breakfast package and ate in the restaurant Nathaniel's I think. Breakfast was delicious. I had the quiche of the day and my husband had the stuffed french toast....to die for! In walking distance to everything.

Yes, Nathaniel's serves breakfast daily and introduced a new menu last month ... stuffed french toast is a new favorite! Salem is a walkable city, and with free on-site parking, you really don't need a car. Not unless you want to venture further North ... in that case, the Hawthorne is a great home base for a tour of the coast. Just be sure to fuel up with a good breakfast before hitting the road!
