  • A touch of old World in new Salem

    by Kathleen B on 2019-05-22 03:38 pm

We really enjoyed staying in a historic place that brings back the touches of old Salem and the grandeur of an older time. The lobby is beautiful and the extra touches from the front desk just brought back a time where respect was the name of the game. We enjoyed looking at the way the hotel has been maintained. From the brass on the elevator to the mail shoot on each floor, we really loved the decor in the room and the chandeliers. I could just imagine how the Captains and Ladies walked the halls in their finest dress. We really loved Tavern on the Green and Nathaniel's Restaurants. Parking yes parking at the hotel, which is great because many things are in walking distance. We were able to go see the House of the Seven Gables, the Salem Witch Museum, the Witch History Museum, and rode the Trolley, (If there is one thing I would recommend it is that). Remember to use the coupons you get from the hotel.

  • Short Visit

This is a Historic Hotel with a great location, awesome staff, and updated accommodations while maintaining historic details. Met many other guests while staying there that ran the gamut of long time guests to first timers - and all seemed to enjoy their experience!

  • Climate control does work, noisy rooms, hard beds

If you're going to convert a 19th century ( possibly 18th century) building into a "luxury hotel," you need to assure your guests the basics.. The climate system expressly details the use of the system: ".....either for cooling or heating, not both..." They shut down the AC late at night causing the temp. of the room to go up 8 degrees from where I set it.. The walls are paper thin, you hear your neighbors water turn on,cough, flush, people in the hallway and lots of street noise. The staff were very nice when I tried to discuss my issues. However they didn't do anything about my complaints.. I'll never stay here again.

Don't let any response by management fool you.. The building is in a nice spot, there is parking, but as far as sleeping and being comfortable, you should go somewhere else.

  • Beautiful hotel

    by Islander1971mv on 2019-05-09 01:40 pm

I had stayed here 20 years ago and love staying in a place of historic value. I was traveling alone and only a suite was available but was worth the extra expense. The front desk was friendly and helpful and the lobby was clean and beautifully appointed. The suite has a large living room and a large bedroom and views of historic downtown Salem. Bed was comfortable and the pillows were amazing. The hotel is old so you have to accept the fact that it can carry noise and doors don't close tightly. Modern amenities are limited but two large flat screen TVs are great. The bathroom is some what small but again it's an old hotel design. The bathtub was a little small with a modern cover so it gave a squishy feeling in some spots. But over all it's a beautiful hotel in a great city and well worth a stay!

  • Stay

Wrote this already and lost the whole thing when logging in- thanks Trip Advisor. ): This is our fourth time staying at the Hawthorne and we come to Salem every year to visit family. I was taken aback by the rude treatment that we received on the morning that we left by the waitress at the restaurant- an older blond woman that was stressed and clearly unused to dealing with the public. She snapped at me several times when I tried to order, ignored me when I asked for water and when I asked a second time she looked at me and seethed "I heard you!". She also went into the kitchen muttering a few times- maybe about me, maybe not. We also accidentally left the cap to our baby's bottle on the table and when I asked about it later was told they didn't have it. I asked again since it was nowhere to be found and another very helpful employee dug through the kitchen trash and found it for us. Hmm, I wonder how it got there. I complained about the rudeness to the front desk and was told that the manager would be notified but nobody got back to me. Also, my mother made the reservation for two rooms and they initially overcharged us, saying our room was an "upgrade" with a sofa bed. Not only was there no sofa bed but there was no dresser for two adults and a toddler. They corrected the bill after she argued. I'm still giving 3 stars because the rest of the staff was great- friendly and accommodating, rooms are comfortable and nice and the location is great, they did give us a Pac' play and a mini fridge, and and we have always loved this hotel but after the restaurant treatment I think we will be looking at other hotels for next year.

    Owner Response
    Lizzie82016:

As a valued, repeat guest of the Hawthorne, we are truly disappointed that you had a less than positive experience on your most recent visit. Our Food & Beverage Manager is reaching out to you to discuss how we can improve our service and earn back your patronage.
