During the 1930s, foreign architects were heavily involved in the construction boom occurring across Shanghai. This lead to many of the city’s new buildings being built in the Art Deco style that was popular in the West during this era. Built in 1934, the Hengshan Picardie features the iconic Art Deco architecture that Shanghai has become famous for. In its heyday, this structure was one of the tallest buildings in southwest Shanghai, sporting a sleek modern design that seemed to resemble an eagle unfolding its wings as it towered over the plaza beneath it.

Today, the Hengshan Picardie offers 232 guestrooms and 20 suites spread throughout the former French Concession apartment complex. All rooms come with satellite LCTV, free WiFi access, a mini bar, and domestic and international calling capabilities. The Picardie’s most luxurious accommodation, the Executive Suite, gives guests 50 square meters of elegant space, a king-size bed along with a beautiful view of the Xujiahui district.

Hengshan Picardie Hotel, a member of Historic Hotels Worldwide since 2019, dates back to 1934.

Fun FactBefore becoming a hotel, the Hengshan Picardie was an apartment complex that housed officials and the heads of foreign firms during the time of the Shanghai International Settlement.
