  • Great Historic Hotel

by TwinTourists on 2019-09-20 03:40 pm

We like experiencing different historic hotels when we travel. The location is close to a lot of things in Downtown Rapid City. The lobby is amazing, like stepping into The Old West days-gone-by with wooden beams and a beautiful Native American motif. There are magnificent wooden carved heads of Indian chiefs totaling 8 on beams high above near the ceiling. There is also a very old stone fireplace with different branding iron insignias branded into the wooden mantle. There is a beautiful chandelier with beautiful Sioux designs.

We had a very nice room. Because someone made a mistake with our reservation, my sister and I ended up having to share a king size bed. No big deal. There was a nice bathroom but it was a bit on the small size. One complaint I have is that the commode is squished between the wall and the sink. Also, I wanted to adjust the spray on the shower head but it was so high, I couldn't reach it. You had to be 6' tall to reach it. Although there was an air conditioning unit in the room, when it was on, it was too cold and when it was off, it was too hot. There was no adjusting it satisfactorily. We were told the room got exceptionally warmer because it is an old building and it was hard to regulate the temperature.

The location is ideal. Close to Main Street Rapid City and all that it offers. There is a Starbucks attached to the hotel as well as an Irish Pub, Chubby Chipmunk Chocolates and the Vertex restaurant on the roof.

I wasn't feeling well the morning we were to check out and my sister saw Dana, the housekeeping supervisor, right in front of our door. My sister told her that I was sick and she was very nice and helpful. She helped my sister get me to our car (there were no wheelchairs available) and she recommended an Acute Care Clinic. She also didn't rush us out of the room. She was just terrific and very nice.

Parking is a bit of a problem so we utilized the valet service and was very glad we did. The valet guys were courteous and efficient.

For the experience of staying in a historic hotel, I wouldn't hesitate to stay at the Hotel Alex Johnson.

  • Fantastic Experience!

This hotel is first class all the way! From the general manager to the hotel staff and concierge - everyone is willing to help. I can't say enough about this hotel. Pick this one! The rooftop bar and restaurant are amazing. Beds comfortable and clean rooms. If I could give more stars I would.

  • Despite the advertisements, this is not a premium property

Considering the room rates and status as a Hilton Curio property, this hotel was nothing more than a regular Hilton, with regular Hilton rooms (no history preserved here other than the lobby). There is no breakfast service other than a Starbucks. The rooftop bar/restaurant is not special. Valet service took forever and porters were non-existent. I would not recommend spending the extra $ for this hotel

  • The best customer service!

I want to give it up for manager Darshan Patel!! This guy is amazing! We had some difficulty getting checked in due to our room....the Presidential Suite not being clean and ready! Darshan listened to our concerns and immediately offered up compensation above and beyond what we expected or anticipated! Other problems...fire alarm at 5:45 a.m. We are on the 9th floor. Long trip down on the stairs. Elevators inoperable when we can return! Wow! Never the less....this is a historical hotel we love.... we'll be back!

  • Nice place

We loved the comfort of the beds and the clean room. We loved the rooftop cafe and having a couple drinks up there with the fire light overlooking the hills and Rapid City. The price was a little crazy, but it was more of a destination than a hotel and we really enjoyed it. Definitely staying here again!
