We stayed here for 2 nights 5-22 and 5-23 2019. We had a WONDERFUL stay...our room, was SPOTLESS !!! I happened to have to go back up to our room after we had left, and found the housekeepers done with the cleaning of our room...and there was a lady with a checklist ...making sure all was perfect....IT WAS...I thanked her profusely, as i did not expect a complete cleaning...This place is super...I asked the front desk guy about restaurants within walking distance...of course he recomended theirs, but also several others....he told me of the ones he did not care for and the ones he did...we were not disappointed. our first night we stayed within the hotel, and ate at the lower bar...they had a good discount for drinks since we stayed there ...and we had a GREAT Irish bowl of meat and spuds...It was really good. We had another discount for the Starbucks for breakfast, so the next day we ate there...I am not a Starbucks person, but, we had a good, (kinda pricey) breakfast...and was on our way.We did not check out the vertex at the 10th floor it just did not appeal to us...BUT...I bet the view is beautiful THIS IS A WONDERFUL PROPERTY.....I do suggest paying extra for the valet...parking really sucks in this downtown area....LOVED OUR STAY !!!

It is always a great time at the Alex Johnson hotel and all of it's first class establishments (Vertex and Paddy O'neill's amongst others). I highly recommend this historic landmark to tourists as well as local residents.

    thank you

  • Interesting combo of historic and updated

    by DesigningWoman13 on 2019-05-24 05:53 am

The lobby is knock-out impressive, like walking into an Old West hotel, with the dark woodwork, buffalo heads, big fireplace, tile floors. But thankfully the rooms have been updated to Hilton standards and are (mostly) great. I say mostly, because the first night we were assigned to an odd little interior room that had faux windows (frosted so light came in but we couldn't see out) and such a small bathroom that you had to sit on the toilet at an angle to avoid your knees hitting the paper holder. What counter space there was was taken up by their complimentary toiletries try. The next morning we asked to be moved and they graciously complied, and our room for the rest of our stay was great. The hot water in the shower was a bit iffy, but they seemed to be working on that.

  • Wonderful lobby and heavenly bed!

We stayed one night after touring the Badlands for three days. We thoroughly enjoyed the hotel, both the public spaces (beautiful historic lobby with a fireplace) and the bedroom(s). We had an unusual set up of two bedrooms separated by the bathroom. Each room had its entry/exit to the corridor. One room had an additional sofa bed, and the other room had a desk, counter top, frig, etc. The beds were absolutely heavenly. I could have stayed there a week! The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. No request was too much: running downstairs for an umbrella, bringing a cellphone that was left in the car with the valet; just top notch. And the area is historic, with several great 1880's-era buildings. The Firehouse Brewery is in an historic fire station. Don't miss it (food OK, wine tasting friendly and good). Rapid City is a fun little place with access to Mount Rushmore.

  • Tacky

by kimime on 2019-05-17 01:22 pm

Upon arrival at 9 pm, there was no valet to be seen.
When exiting the car there were homeless begging over the railing of the outdoor bar patio. The music was so loud and the language trashy from the drunk customers. I felt sorry for the hotel rooms above the bar.
When making my reservations prior, I had a 20 minute phone conversation with a AJ employee before booking my room, requesting a corner room on the SE side. There was no record of this conversation.
I noticed the front desk, when answering phone calls, had to continually ask customers to repeat what they said as the employees could not hear them over the obnoxious noise from the adjoining bar. We were given a West room level with all the outdoor air conditioning units. We had to lug our luggage back down to the lobby to once again request the room we had asked for.
We went to the rooftop bar where we were greeted and told to sit anywhere. I asked for water and was told it would be awhile as they were out of clean water glasses. (The customer does not want to hear excuses. Clear one the empty tables, riddled with dirty glasses and wash them.) The waitress said they were quite busy and said "SH**" to describe the situation! While waiting for our drinks bar patrons had somehow made it to the rooftop and one group made an entrance up the flight of stairs to the 2nd level by calling out, "***HOLE" to someone below! How classy. Customers already sitting looked at each other with looks that said, (Can you believe this?).
30 minutes later our drinks arrived which were incorrect. We once again had to request water.
Never again. Even though the hotel is historic, it is managed with a tacky hand.
