  • Fantastic location for New York

by Jfrinzi on 2019-04-14 08:03 am

The hotel is right across from Central Park, near great restaurants, and shopping. The hotel is clean and professional. The hotel restaurant is not up to JW standards though. It is up to the standard of a random Marriott in Kansas City. The food quality is ok, the service is not up to JW standard, and it's mediocre ambiance. I would not eat at the restaurant on purpose, or recommend it. Really disappointing, and kind of a joke. The room service is also WAY over priced, and also mediocre.

The room is very comfortable, and modern. The bed is great, and the pillows are comfortable. The TV has an added feature to sign into your netflix account, which is great. For New York standards, it's a big room too.

  • Experience at Essex

    by O5933PHjimm on 2019-04-13 011:57 pm

We had a very comfortable stay at this hotel on a weekend visit to Manhattan. The most appealing thing about this property is it's location. This hotel is right across the street from Central Park, a block from Columbus Circle and easy walking distance from all the shows on Broadway. The building itself is old but everything works great in terms of the plumbing, heating and cooling systems. The lobby is small but we experienced no problems with the front desk, concierge or doormen. The beds are nice and maid service was very satisfactory. There is a nice breakfast buffet in the restaurant off the lobby and the service staff there are very good but prices are high like everywhere else in NYC. The hotel went out of their way to honour an AMEX reward that was attached to our booking. I would definitely stay there again.

  • Great location and views

    by 235danp on 2019-04-09 06:26 pm

We had a Central Park facing room on the 19th floor with beautiful views of the park. We had an event at the Plaza hotel on a Saturday night so this was convenient to the event.

The room was clean and modernized with plenty of outlets conveniently placed for charging personal devices.

The front desk, concierge, bell hop and restaurant staff were very professional and nice. Sunday morning we took a long walk in the park which was directly across the street.

  • Return Visit

by Falkirkgirl on 2019-04-09 03:47 pm

We returned here after a visit in Nov 2015 - where we said if we were ever back in NYC this would be the place (subject to cost!) we would stay. We were travelling with two children (17 & 12) and booked a junior suite and got an upgrade to a Manhattan suite (with Marriott rewards - the only way we could afford it!). This was well worth it as the Manahattan suite gives you a proper separate living room with couch that makes up into a double bed. We had partial views of Central Park which was an added bonus. The kids said the couch bed was comfortable enough but after the 5th night they said a proper bed would be good. The rooms have all been recently upgraded and were very comfortable in general. No tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms nor fridge for your own things, however you can ask for a fridge /microwave for your room.

The hotel permits dogs and there were guests with dogs on our floor (36) - we never heard the dogs other than when we were walking to and from the elevators.

The hotel has an Executive Lounge which we used and provided you with a full breakfast every day, and evening dishes Monday thru Thursday with an honour bar. A little disappointed that it is no longer open the other days in the evening, and after breakfast on those days it isn't open during the day at all not even for teas/coffees etc.

In terms of location - it's fantastic. Steps to Central Park and only ten minutes walk to Times Square and many other sights. We had lunch at the Foodcourt at the Plaza a couple of times - a great find for quality lunch when you don't want a sit down meal. Would definitely recommend exploring here.

We ate in the Southgate restaurant at the hotel a couple of times. The food was of a good quality however the menu is limited and it is a little on the expensive side - but probably not for NYC. We met up with relatives one evening and the restaurant proved a good venue with a large high table for the 8 of us to sit round - for a relaxed finger food experience. Our lady server was excellent.

I would say it is a comfortable hotel in a good location (it is however a little more expensive) would definitely stay again when back in NYC.

  • Wonderful stay!

    by CurlGurl310 on 2019-04-08 10:29 am

Spent 3 nights at the Essex House in one of their suites. We were with our 2 young kids and the set up was one of the most spacious for NYC hotels. The living room had plenty of space for both of our kids to comfortably sleep and play. Location was ideal, across from Central Park, subway station on the block and surrounded by lots of restaurants. Easy check in and concierge was helpful and accomodating.
Only complaint is that we had a view of a brick wall and it sounded like jet engines (giany exhaust fans) outside our window. This blocked out all of the loud street noise though so I guess it was the lesser of 2 evils. Will be staying here again because of the great room set up for our family!
