  • Mixed Feelings

The hotel emphasizes its history but you won't find very much historic about it. It has apparently undergone an interior renovation and anything historic about the lobby is gone. It now looks like any modernistic Intercontinental.

The guest rooms are relatively small as in many older hotels, but the furniture was decent and the bathroom was modern and spotless. Be advised that convenient electrical outlets are few. I had booked a "Leisure King" but apparently got a "Standard King" which, from what I have read, is probably just as well. Yes, there is a nightly approximately $40 "convenience fee" for a parking place that we did not use, wifi, bottled water, things you'd assume came with the room at any other venue. It's kind of a ripoff, but very little in Key West comes without a price and if you read the hotel blurb before you go they do mention it so it was not unexpected.

The bed was new but to me so-so for comfort, the refrigerator is so minuscule as to be almost useless and there was no in-room safe. Considering its location, on Duval, the place is relatively quiet. The resturaunt is nothing remarkable and pricey.

The staff is cordial and helpful.

If you contemplate staying here, do so for the proximity to Duval, it is almost in the middle, and the action areas of Old Town at a reasonable price. The hotel is within reasonable walking distance of pretty much everything. Other than that, the place has little special to recommend it. It is not by any means a "resort" in the Key West tradition.

  • Give this place a wide berth

Checked in and was given a room something akin to jail cell dirty and smelly asked to move to a room that had a window and was even worse the windows were filthy to match the flee bitten room I checked out and even the valet guys agreed that the hotel is awful

  • Be aware.

    by 270jimi on 2019-12-07 08:22 am

Stayed 3 free nights on points. Only to find out they charged a "Resort Fee" of $39 a night for free nights. Totally frustrated trying to get a credit. Be aware free isn't free and this fee isn't quoted in IHG booking.

Hotel is meticulously managed, very clean and the staff is VERY professional and welcoming. We had to checkout a day early due to family emergency and the manager was incredibly accommodating. We will most certainly be returning for a longer stay very soon!

  • Historic Heart ripped out

    by beachqueen2015 on 2019-11-13 04:46 am

The hotel and other local tourist information publicises La Concha as a unique and historic gem in Key West reflecting its 1926 origins in character and furnishings and enticing and exciting current guests to walk in the steps of famous historic figures including Truman and Hemmingway.

When we first visited in 2007 and walked in to the grand lobby, all La Concha's illustrious history was palpable. We were greeted by a traditionally dressed bell hop who diligently and enthusiatically took care of us and our luggage. We checked in at an impressive reception and could easily imagine celebrities through the decades doing so before us. The dark wood, marbled floors , period furniture and swirling ceiling fans drew us to sit and take in the historic past in the grand lobby and to return again and again during our stay to connect to the past some more.

So impressed were we that we returned twice more within a few years just to repeat this wonderful experience and we saw many tourists just coming in to marvel at the grand lobby although they were not staying in the hotel.

Now returning 10 years later to relive this once more, imagine our horror to find the historic lobby gone and a modern, glass, backlit bar the first sight for visitors and dominating the whole lobby instead. The reception desk is no longer grand but is inconspicuous in a corner, the concierge is in the background at his desk instead of being front and centre by the entrance where he used to justifiably sit. Gone are the colonnial style furnishings and fixtures in favour of mundane seating in a multipurpose area used for the inexplicably reduced breakfast and dinner service the hotel now offers guests.

To say we are hugely saddened by this unsympathetic development does not begin to describe the loss we feel for this historic building and its loyal staff.
We understand progress is necessary to reflect changing tastes and needs in our modern world. However, we also have a duty to remember and preserve our past. Future guests may never know how majestic this hotel was and that is an irreparable pity.
