  • Location, Location, Location!

    by chinadoll1961 on 2018-08-16 01:36 pm

This historic hotel has all the modern touches without sacrificing character. From the moment we were greeted by the valet until he returned our car upon check out, we were treated like special guests from each and every staff member. The front desk called our room after we had a few minutes to settle in and asked if everything was fine and did we need anything. Room was clean and spacious. Bed was comfy. The ice service was much appreciated after the long hot days. Just call and they bring ice to the room. Because of it's central location to the city, we never even used our car. We walked or used the free Duval loop bus everywhere we needed to go. We didn't know until after I got home and looked at photos of the hotel that the rooftop level had great views of the city. We will definitely do that next time when we return.

  • Mixed Emotions About This Hotel

    by dbron79857 on 2018-08-14 12:23 am

The La Concha is in a great location - right in the middle of everything - right in the middle of Duval Street. This is the second time we have stayed here. The first time was in 2009 so before the renovations. I see many complaints about the size of the rooms and it is true they are very small, but that really doesn't bother me. When I am in Key West I don't want to sit in my room!! (the bathroom was the smallest bathroom I have ever been in that wasn't a half bath) We had a king room with a balcony. It was nice to do once but I wouldn't do it again. The balconies are not private at all. There is only a metal railing between each one and it is not higher than the chairs. On Saturday evening the room next to us was having a birthday gathering on their balcony so we made new friends because there was really nothing keeping us away from their party:-)! The balconies are over the lobby and over looking Duval so if you don't want noise until 5 am don't get a balcony room. I knew when I booked the hotel it was going to be noisy so I am not complaining about it. It was Lobsterfest that weekend and the street fair was right in front of the hotel.

Renovations were nice but I was a bit disappointed with the shape of things. I know Irma came through last year but the shape of the things inside the room were not due to a hurricane. The toilet was very marred and old. The door covering the mini fridge didn't close properly and the safe was in the bottom drawer of the dresser and I felt like I was going to pull off the front of the drawer every time I opened it. I think the safe was just too heavy to be in a drawer.

There were no extra outlets to charge items. I have been in many hotels that have been renovated and many have a strip on the desk with extra outlet and USB plugs but the La Concha did not. I was charging my phone on the floor using the lamp outlet. The baseboards and such could have used a bit more dusting. The pool area seemed the same as it did in 2009. I don't think there were too many renovations there.

The bed was SO comfortable. Even with the noise from Duval Street I slept very well. When we were there in 2009 we were not in a balcony room but still over looked Duval and at that time they supplied ear plugs, eye masks and a scented spray to put on your pillow. They no longer do that which is a shame since the bed sleeps so well. Ear plugs would have made it heaven

The staff was nice. I didn't have much interaction with them other than check in and check out but no complaints.

So will I stay at the La Concha again?, yes. The things that were lacking aren't enough to turn me away. I would definitely get a room on the other side of the hotel from Duval if I do stay there. I don't think this will be my go to hotel, but it ranks up there because of the location. I wish TripAdvisor had a GOOD button to rate - the hotel is better than average but I can't give it a VERY GOOD rating either

  • Excellent 5 Star Hotel! Very Pleased with My 7 Day Stay!

    by Vinny067 on 2018-08-12 07:18 am

I am nearing the end of a 7-day stay here. I am an IHG Club Spire Elite member, and I made my reservation online on the hotel website.

I reserved, and received, a King Bed Nonsmoking room, located on the 4th floor of the west wing of the building. The west wing is of relatively new construction. The east wing, which parallels Duval, which is 6 stories high, was built in the early 1900s, and a number of the rooms in that wing, particularly many overlooking Duval, are smaller (but also cheaper) than rooms in the west wing (BTW, there are also some larger rooms, and also suites, located in the old east wing as well).

So, if you have wondered why you see 4 and 5 star reviews for this property that are interspersed with a few 1 or 2 star reviews, well, in most cases, those lower-rated reviews were written by folks who reserved cheaper rooms in the old east wing, where rooms are often smaller, bathrooms are often smaller, and where the room walls are thin and may allow sound to travel.

Overall, this is a great 5-star hotel. Everything about my stay so far has been great, and in every way imaginable the hotel has exceeded my expectations; this is the best Crowne Plaza hotel in which I have ever stayed, and one of the two best IHG hotels in which I have ever stayed.

For each of my past yearly trips to Key West since 2010, I had always stayed in small hotels, inns and guest houses on White Street, in Old Town, to be far away from the crowds of Duval Street. This property is heads and shoulders above the properties in Old Town in which I had previously stayed.

Here are some notes regarding my stay, in no particular order:

-- I had requested, and promptly received, an early check-in when I arrived at the hotel at about 2 PM. The front desk person was who checked me in was Jasmine, the Front Desk supervisor. She was amazing: quick, efficient, very competent, friendly, and helpful.

-- Elevator is large, bright, and a bit slow to arrive at times, but only because it is the sole elevator in the west wing (it's also possible to use the two east wing elevators and then use the interconnecting hallway).

-- lobby, common areas/spaces, hallways, elevator and rooms are spacious, bright, airy, well-furnished, well-maintained and scrupulously clean.

-- the lobby, as well as the covered outdoor area outside the front entrance, offers a wide variety of comfortable seating areas, and so, even if the lobby is crowded, it's always possible to find a quiet place to meet with a client or colleague.

-- my King room is large, well-maintained, scrupulously clean, and offers not only a closet but plenty of drawers and cabinet space, and a sofa. Like all rooms here, my room has a fridge; it is a large hotel fridge; it is clean and shelves intact. Bathroom is large and well-designed.

-- all of the hotel staff whom I have encountered have been friendly and helpful.

-- there are plenty of AC outlets in all areas of the room, so many that I am amazed.

-- WiFi is workable, but a bit slow and sporadic at times, same as is true of the WiFi service at ALL of the other hotels, inns and guest houses in which I have ever stayed in Key West, and is also true of the WiFi at all businesses here in Key West; this is simply due to the fact that this is an island in the middle of nowhere, far from the mainland, and Internet service to the island is a bit spotty.

-- when I travel, I always prefer the "green" approach (IHG calls it Green Engage), because I do not want my bed made daily, nor my sheets changed daily, nor my towels changed daily. Shortly after I had checked in, I was lucky enough to bump into a housekeeping supervisor in the hallway, and I introduced myself and explained my green preferences to her, and she promptly entered that into her notes.

-- housekeepers are very respectful of the "Do Not Disturb" door sign if you hang it on your door. Housekeepers are very helpful and very respectful in general.

-- my room is very quiet. I never hear sounds from other rooms, nor from the hallway, nor from outdoors.

-- the heating/cooling system in my room is great; I can reliably dial in any temperature that I desire from 60 degrees to 85 degrees F (I normally keep it at 77 degrees, because I like a warm room.)

-- I must mention Chris Smith, the night manager/auditor. He has always been friendly, approachable, helpful and willing to go well beyond the normal call of duty whenever I have called the front desk at night or have bumped into him in the lobby in the wee hours of the morning (I wake up early, and try to eat breakfast by 6 AM each day).

Bottom line: Great 5-star hotel. I recommend it highly! I will return next year.

Hints and tips: Make sure you belong to the IHG club prior to making your reservation; even better if you are an Elite member. Always make your reservation via the hotel website (Crowne Plaza and IHG sites included) or by calling the IHG reservation line, and never via 3rd party online discounters.

  • Location was perfect on Duval street in Old Town

    by otmom2017 on 2018-08-10 010:41 pm

We have stayed here many times on visits to Key West, so I will address the hotel overall and on this particular visit. First of all, you cannot beat its location right in the middle of Duval Street ,walking or biking distance to just about anywhere in Old Town. It was a perfect location to celebrate our son's 21st birthday. And I was really impressed with a gentleman named Keith Duffy who worked diligently to find my prescription glasses that I errantly left behind when we checked out. I have never had a manager try so hard to find a missing item and I really appreciate that he did! Our valet was amazing! And believe me we come with ALOT of stuff, so hats off to him. However, I do have a problem with this Crown Plaza charging a $35 "destination Fee". This hotel is historic and a great location but NOT a resort. I was told at booking that fee covered valet parking, a golf cart ride within Duval street area and a complimentary drink. YES , ONE DRINK per stay. That is one expensive drink. And then I was told at check in that the golf cart was no longer available and was given a voucher for a free breakfast. We are Spire members, top Loyalty IHG customers and every other Crown Plaza or Holiday Inn waives any fee whether it is parking or resort fee for Spire Members. Matter of fact I had just stayed at a very busy tourist Crown Plaza in Orlando the previous week and the $16 a day parking fee was waived for Spire Members. And that brings me to the rooms we were assigned to. We were given the smallest rooms at the hotel. And they are SMALL. We have stayed at this hotel many times and I have been in the large , medium and small rooms. I was told they were full that night and we got the rooms left. Hmmm not a good way to reward your top loyalty members by assigning them the smallest room. But the hotel's location , along with the amazing customer service given by the valet and manager finding my missing glasses almost made up for the unappreciative treatment of a Spire member.

A gem of a location in the Holiday Inn chain. This historic hotel is fully contemporary and situated in walking distance of nearly everything. Easy stroll to Mallory Square, Sloppy Joe's, and the Hemingway Home.
