  • Needs some organizational help

    by bmpe77 on 2019-06-23 11:48 am

The hotel is interesting and the grounds are beautiful, plus it is within three blocks of the plaza. However, there are some management issues that need to be addressed.

I booked this hotel for a one-night stay after visiting Taos for a week. I've been working on Marriott loyalty, and it was the only Marriott branded hotel near the plaza. Thankfully, I used points and didn't pay the posted rate of nearly $400.

The night before my stay, I received the "Arriving early? Check in now" email from Marriott. I knew I'd be in around 1pm, so I selected that. Generally, checking in early at Marriott properties has never been a problem. Upon arriving at 1:00 the next day, we had the valet take the car (the valet is by far the best run part of this property), and went inside, where the front desk person told me that the room was not yet ready. They took my number and said they'd give me a call when it was ready, insinuating that it wouldn't take very long, but mentioning that it was "guaranteed" by 4:00. So, we went to lunch, walked around the plaza, and did some other things, until about 2:45 -- ample time to get a room cleaned. I was told simply "it's still not ready". There was no "please feel free to wait in our lobby, please have a drink, etc" -- nothing. So, we went and wandered a bit more, returning at precisely 4:00. By that time, there was a large backlog of people trying to get checked in. Rooms were being handed out to some, and not to others. I asked again and there was a lot of verbal finger pointing at housekeeping, then was told I was getting an "upgrade" but the original room was ready if I wanted what the person described as something like "a much worse room". That was never once mentioned to me previously. At that point, I told them I was going to get on the phone with Marriott to ask about the "guarantee" -- I was ready to just forfeit the points and drive on to Albuquerque -- then a manager, John, came out and really worked to smooth things over. We were presented immediately with keys, and he went and got our bags from the car.

All it would have taken was a little more courtesy up front -- maybe a call at 3:30 to tell me that they're backed up and need some more time -- maybe not using an "upgrade" as an excuse -- to make this short stay much better.

The room was a "spa" room, so it was more spacious and had a gas fireplace -- I assume one of the "newer" rooms in the hotel. In housekeeping's "haste", however, they failed to pick up some sort of cookie or food crumbs all over the bathroom floor. The sink handles were also loose, and the air conditioning never cooled the room, even though it wasn't a particularly hot day.

In summary, this hotel is nice, but not quite living up to it's billing as some sort of luxury resort.

  • Very pretty courtyard

The complementary water was a nice touch. At the last minute, they were able to upgrade our room type for us at our request! Wish we'd had a meal at the restaurant's outside patio as it looked very inviting. Our room overlooked the very pretty courtyard!

  • Pretty grounds and nice staff

The grounds of this hotel and very pretty and it is close to the historic area of Santa Fe. We had our dog with us so we dined outside and the food was wonderful and they were very sweet to our dog. The room was quite disappointing we looked at the roof top of a building next door. When we arrived we were offered complimentary cocktails and after dinner you were able to roast s'mores so that was fun and a nice treat. I think the Manager is realy trying and that shows.

    Dear photosanddogs,
Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback.
I am sorry that the view was not great. We hope that the service, historic quality and fun atmosphere make up for that.
The cocktails are fun and I love doing s'mores!
    Thank you,
    Derrick

  • Hotel Just OK, Spa is Awesome

    by Lucca7014 on 2019-06-21 02:01 pm

The people that work at this hotel make is worth visiting. The rooms are nothing special. The location is great. Easy walking distance to the town square and lots of very good restaurants. The Spa is excellent. Go have a nice massage and ask for Rebecca and/or Caroline. Excellent therapists. We enjoyed breakfast, very good fruit and oatmeal!!
