  • Hawaii At Itâs Very Best!!

    by Jim2344 on 2018-08-19 04:51 pm

If you have ever dreamed of the perfect Hotel to stay at in Hawaii this would be it! My wife and I stayed here almost 33 years ago on our honeymoon and after our daughter got married last weekend we decided to return for a second honeymoon!

From the moment you walk in the open air lobby and see the beautiful ocean in front of you with all the shades of blue you can imagine you know you are in paradise! Although over the years we have stayed at both the Four Seasons and the Mauna Lani, there is no hotel in the big Island that boast a beach as beautiful as this resort! To wake up every morning to this serene view is just something very special! And the sunsets - OMG some of the best you will ever experience.

As far as the rooms we had a deluxe ocean front king with a large lanai and it was exquisite! In addition, the walk in shower in the bathroom was a welcome surprise and an improvement since the last time we stayed here. Also the twice daily maid service was impeccable!

As far as the restaurants I highly recommend the Copper Bar and the breakfast buffet at Manta. We did not have the opportunity to have dinner at Manta but some friends we met at the Lua has dinner there and said it was excellent! As I mentioned above we did attend the Lua and the Clambake (wrote a separate review on that) and both are not to be missed!

You have some top hotels on this island but if you want to stay at a true Hawaii Hotel or resort with the best beach, top golf, great food, and exceptional service, the Mauna Kea would be my top choice on the Big Island!

  • Beautiful relaxing resort

by bctrvlers on 2018-08-19 01:02 pm

Mauna Kea is a classic! We celebrated our 35th anniversary on the Big Island and the highlight was MK. Our room was not ready when we arrived and we were not only upgraded to a beautiful suite but personally escorted to our beachfront room by Gregory, the head of housekeeping. They made our short stay so special and can't thank them enough. Be sure to do the docent led tour of the artworks on Saturday!

  • Relaxing!

    by Alicia D on 2018-08-19 09:55 am

I want to thank this hotel, it was the perfect therapy I needed to relax after spending so much money on fertility treatments months ago, the doctor advised me to relax and come back to talk about adoption. We did as she said, went to this great hotel and came back pregnant!!!! The room was on ground floor to the sea, it had an amazing view, it was big and luxurious. We had star gazing by the boat at night, very romantic. The restaurants are little bit expensive, it would be great if the hotel were all inclusive. The pools were very elegant and never too crowded. The sauna was espectacular. We highly recommend this hotel and I got special gratitude for this hotel, i will always remember this place as magical and where miracles do happen!

  • The best beach on Hawai'i, great architecture, but...

    by Hans H on 2018-08-16 08:51 am

I had been looking forward to our week on the Big Island, in part because of the great experience I had in Seoul at a 'sister hotel' from the Autograph collection. What I learned is that the "Autograph Collection" really is an empty word. It means nothing except maybe for iconic buildings. But it certainly is no quality standard and you cannot compare these independently run hotels.

The Mauna Kea is famous, the architecture of the building impressive, but that's where it gets complicated. The rooms are okay, but it's the service that is challenging, to put it mildly. The good first: the concierge service is very good, and their assistance was most welcome. We loved the beach, but some of the equipment (umbrellas and chairs) are old and worn/torn. The cabanas on the lawn are always soaking wet (since the sprinklers soak them nightly) to the degree that you just won't use them.

But... housekeeping is a mess. Allow me to explain: we had ordered a suite with a connecting bedroom. Turns out there are no connecting rooms except via the suite's bedroom! (strange architecture!) Even though we'd requested this six months ago, they put my dad in a room on another floor, on the other side of the building. After complaining, they were moved to another room, closer, but still on a different floor. So much for getting to spend time together in the suite's living room where we used the couch so that our son could sleep.

Housekeeping forgot to prepare the bed four days out of seven. Twice we had to put the bed away again so that we could all sit on the couch. Housekeeping often doesn't show up until after 4 pm. They're sloppy and forget detergents or replacing towels etc. I don't think I've ever seen a housekeeping dept in such disarray.

But that wasn't all. We had challenges at the breakfast buffet where the communication between restaurant and hotel were non-existent. One day we ate for free, some days' two got off, sometimes they charged us for five. The only constant? You never knew what would happen next.

All in all, most of our grievances were resolved after we made the hotel aware of it, but given the very high prices the hotel charges and the service levels we experienced, I doubt I'd return here.

We want to thank you for choosing to stay with us at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Autograph Collection for your recent visit to the Island of Hawaii. While it was our pleasure having you and your family here as our guests, we would like to sincerely apologize of the level of service you received during your stay. Our hotel team takes great pride and dedication in providing exceptional service to best accommodate our guests and serve them with the spirit of Aloha. We are sorry to see your comments regarding the inconsistency of the housekeeping services but does offer an area for improvement. This is definitely not the type of experience we want to provide with our guests and again would like to apologize for any inconveniences. Thank you for your time!

  • Awesome Hotel!

    by Cindy K on 2018-08-15 01:00 pm

My family and I had three ocean view rooms at this amazing hotel last week. The rooms were clean and larger than what we expected so we were pleasantly surprised.
Prior to the trip Melanie at the Concierge desk helped me to plan an amazing trip. She suggested tours and options for us and was patient with all of my questions. The other members of the Concierge team helped us once we are at the hotel.
The restaurants were great and the customer service in general was outstanding.
We would be happy to visit the hotel again and would recommend it to others.
