  • WOW

Everything from the the valets to the concierge is top notch. The staff will bend over backwards to help you. The grounds are magnificent, love the drive in. The beach is beautiful and the restaurants are great. Take a walk on the hiking trail and go north. It is quite spectacular. I can't say enough about how great this resort is. Highly recommended.

  • Wanted to give it 5 stars, but staff was lacking

    by gold233790 on 2019-08-15 05:06 pm

This place is beautiful. As nice a beach as you'll ever see, modern and clean rooms, great location with easy access to many other activities. But while much is 5 star, some of the service staff is decidedly not. Now....the front facing staff is great. Front desk, concierge, beach attendants- we loved them. Couldn't be more helpful, welcoming, and cheery. Restaurant staff was also good, if a bit slow (we're in Hawaii, so understood there!). But the housekeeping and maintenance staff is a nightmare. We had a room near a housekeeping closet. No worries, understand there will be some occasional activity, right? Nope. Every single day, at 3pm and continuing until 8:30pm, staff would lay out three ironing boards and four housekeeping carts directly in front of our door. I am not joking when I say we literally had to turn sideways to enter or exit the room during this time. Throughout the afternoon and early evening, there would be 2-4 staff ironing, dropping bags of dirty laundry, and talking loudly and laughing consistently. I addressed it twice with an individual who seemed to be their supervisor. The first time he literally shrugged and walked away, the second time he said my room was unfortunately placed. Then, at 3am one night we needed to call the front desk since maintenance was using a leaf blower outside our room. Just crazy. It's so sad...such an amazing place with really good staff...and they are allowing their housekeeping and maintenance staff to ruin experiences. I'd love to come back...the hotel is gorgeous. But there might be a slight pause.

  • Would be 5 stars if not for unfriendly staff and the roaches!

by BGTGNewJersey on 2019-08-15 09:52 am

We loved the location of this hotel as it was on the most beautiful beach. Beachfront rooms were very modern and nice but the bed was almost a hammock it was sinking in on both sides. DO NOT get a ground floor room as the roaches are everywhere! We had at least 10 of them in our room over 2 days and you could see them scattering across walkways on the grounds at night. They need to do a better job with pest control. The Manta for breakfast was great and the package is a way to save money as it's really expensive. We loved the Hau tree for dinner with great service and food. Overall the staff wasn't very friendly with a couple of exceptions and they seemed put out by any questions and had a very blas? attitude about the roaches. The pool is just ok but nice when the beach is windy. Overall a nice stay and we would go back because the location and beach were incredible.

  • Breathtaking views, beautiful beach, pure paradise

    by Harris F on 2019-08-08 07:09 pm

The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel far exceeded every expectation we had. Photos just cannot do this resort justice. From the moment you drive up to the hotel, you just know it is special. Every inch of the property is serene, with beautiful art and sculptures, flowered trees, parrots greeting us, comfortable seating in every corner, soothing music, manicured lawns, interesting trees to climb on, rocks to explore, the list is endless! However, the views of the beach are the highlight. The beach is pure white sand, no shells or rocks to step on, with perfect ocean waves and tropical fish and manta rays to snorkel with. We even saw a sea turtle swimming along the shore! The staff lays out umbrellas and different types of chairs and lounges to rest upon, and provides water and fruit all day. You needn't even leave the resort to do the night snorkel with the mantas (you just wade in from the beach!), and they rent snorkels, boards, kayaks, paddle boards, etc... We highly recommend you stay in a beachfront room, with a balcony overlooking the ocean- pure bliss. The sunsets are incredible. Our beachfront rooms were very modern and comfortable, with all the amenities. The staff is very courteous. The buffet breakfast at Manta is sublime. Drinks are very well prepared. The only minor complaint we have is that dinner was very expensive at all venues, and the service at all the restaurants was noticeably slow. Overall we have never stayed at a resort quite as beautiful as the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel a.ka. paradise!!! We are so glad we opted to spend some downtime from the sightseeing, and just soak in the beauty of the resort.

  • A bit of a mixed bag

    by Jcotta1970 on 2019-08-07 05:24 am

This was our third hotel on our third Hawaiian island, having previously been at the Ritz Carlton on Oahu and the Hotel Wailea on Maui both of which I have 5 stars to....

Mauna Kea Beach obviously has a lot of love for it going by some of the previous reviews and you can see why the positives for us were

Incredible location and beach, amazing 1960s architecture, viewed from the ocean it has overtones of Tracey Island from Thunderbirds or the lair of a James Bond villain. Views from our balcony were breathtaking. Manta the restaurant puts on a great breakfast buffet and the breakfast team are great. Plenty of loungers on the beach, Hau Tree beachside bar and restaurant serves great food and cocktails. Gym is well equipped if a little cramped, Spa service is great but it is just 4 treatment rooms no sauna steam room etc. Couple of people shout outs, Tim the bartender friendly and engaging and gave us a couple of glasses of champagne on the house for our anniversary, Patrick by the pool could not do enough to ensure we were happy and comfortable, amazing service. Jessie on the car and concierge team also great.

On the downside however that classic 60s architecture means public areas above the lobby feel a bit motel, the rooms need some serious updating we were in 826, overuse of the colour orange, big ugly wooden unit dominates the room, bathroom over bath shower and a bath too small to lie down in. Dinner at Copper was a disaster, Chicken Wings and Sliders to start were OK but were still on the table when the entrees arrived, this did not deter the server from setting them down anyway... rib eye steak was tough and the supposed baby broccoli was like undercooked tree. The scallops main arrived swimming in butter and with soggy rice. The bill Including a bottle of wine but with the scallops being removed was still $200, not worth the money. Hau Tree beach bar needs a seriously good clean it just felt sticky and grubby, service definitely split between customers the bar team knew and those it did not.

Summary would be incredible location and some service highlights but in a 5* property at this price more work is needed on service plus a refurbishment and a new Exec chef would work wonders.
