The Westin offers a bland, cookie-cutter experience in the heart of Waikiki. The property has enormous potential, but is let down by rote service and poor attention to detail.
The Westin offers a bland, cookie-cutter stay in the heart of Waikiki. The enormous potential of a historic property in a prime location is let down by lackluster service and poor attention to detail.

Location: The Moana was the first big resort hotel on Waikiki, and the original building dates to the early 20th century. Additions, including a high-rise tower, have since expanded the property. The hotel is in the middle of Waikiki's retail and entertainment strip, and on a good - if very crowded - stretch of beach.

Rooms: We stayed in the old wing. Note that the rooms and bathrooms are quite small. The door could barely open without hitting the bed, and the king-sized bed and our luggage took up almost all of the floor space. We didn't have a balcony or ocean view. If you're on the tower side of the old building, you're very close to the balconies of the tower rooms, and have a view of nothing except the tower. Anyone sensitive to noise should avoid the inland side of the hotel, which is subject to noise from traffic and street performers.

Food and amenities: The pool is small, and packed. We didn't eat at the hotel. Service for drinks at the beachside cafe was adequate. There's an interesting exhibition on the hotel's history on the second floor of the main building.

Service: Here's where the hotel underperforms. Laden with luggage, we walked into the old building and searched in vain for anyone who could tell us where to find check-in. Check-in itself is delineated by a Vegas-style rope line, an indication that you're going to be processed, rather than welcomed - and that's exactly what happened. After waiting in line, the clerk greeted me with "Just wait a second" as she scanned her computer. Perhaps it's a hangover from the Starwood acquisition, but it took a long time for the clerk to find my Bonvoy information.

I was on a business trip (granted, not the hotel's typical demographic!) and needed to shine my shoes. When I asked if there was shoe-shine service, I was told yes, and then someone arrived at the room - not to pick up the shoes, but to give me shoe polish (in the wrong color). Housekeeping was spotty (see photo of the A/C vent in the room). Twice, the soap dispensers were empty in the lobby restroom. It's trivial, but I had to laugh when the drink on offer in the lobby was marked with a card reading "guava elixer" - even details like spelling seem to be beyond this place.

Pick the Westin if you want an adequate stay and the sense that you're another tick on Marriott's tally. Otherwise, look around for a property that offers better value for money and starts with a focus on the guest.

For our first trip to Hawaii my husband and I were lucky to book Moana Surfrider for our 7 night stay as it was last minute. From the moment we arrived to our last day was truly amazing! This place is beautiful from the entrance lobby, amazing smell, fruit infused water containers for thirsty beach goers, BANYAN Tree, and comfy beds! The location is perfect and close to everything; the beach, restaurants, snorkeling, surfing and so much more! PLUS, the private beach lounges available for guests is in the BEST location in Waikiki! While you lounge on the beach, you can go to the beach cafe in this hotel which serves up the biggest acai bowl in the area for your buck or have lunch/dinner beachfront at the restaurant! The best part of all was the people and ambiance of this hotel. We met MO and LEE who accommodated us at the beach/pool lounge area and made us feel like family during our visit. Mo and Lee were the friendliest and always greeted us with the 'Aloha' spirit which made us really fall in love with Hawaii, especially the Moana Surfrider! We can't say enough about this place, you REALLY have to experience it for yourselves! We can't wait to go back next year to our second home, the Moana Surfrider!

  • Beautiful old place

We stayed in 4 different hotels on this trip and this was my favorite. The old building has been beautifully redone. The service was great. The pool and beach were small but not bad for being in the city.

  • Best spa treatment ever from Detrecia Maeshack and her niece Kira

I would love to give a special thank you to Ms. Maria for the most wonderful facial I've ever gotten I definitely recommend her, she's very sweet and kid and all around a good person with an amazing personality. Her facial made my skin glow and feel so soft, getting all the dirt out and getting that deep clean in my skin. I would also like to thank Ms. Teresa for the lovely pedicure, she has magic hands my toes look amazing. I'm not going to anyone else to get my toes done, for the short time I was there I got to know the great person Teresa is, I got some amazing life changing advise. This was just an amazing experience I feel everyone should go to this spa it's so wonderful.

  • The grand dame of Waikiki

An exceptional property that stands apart from all other hotels in Honolulu. Elegant and well preserved. Not surprisingly, the rooms do vary in size and comfort. The veranda area is lovely and worth a visit even if not staying at the property. Parking is tight and valet seems like a must. Immediately next to the main tea of Waikiki Beach. Hotel can and does accommodate many foreign visitors, mostly notably from Japan, with an occasional wedding party in the lobby.
