    Visited Newport for a last minute weekend getaway with my husband. The hotel exceeded our expectations. We were first time visitors and our room was upgraded to a beautiful suite. Everything was clean and the property was very quiet. The rooftop hot tub was perfect. The staff was friendly and helpful, especially Melinda at the front desk. I imagine this place is hopping in the summer season, but it makes a great getaway in the off season too. Will definitely be back!

    My Mom and I enjoyed an off-season weekend here and hopped around Newport, Narragansett, and Providence. We've stayed at this hotel previously and have enjoyed the simple accommodations -- It's not fancy, but it's clean, it's nice, and the staff are always exceed expectations. Parking is nice and easy and the location is super convenient. I deducted a star for two reasons. On a previous visit, the hotel was gracious enough to let us check-in early after I fell ill on our way there (imagine getting a stomach bug on a road trip! Awful!). The staff were amazing and upgraded us to a two-bedroom suite (whereas we'd previously stayed in a two-bed single room) so that I could be sick in peace and my Mom could stay away from me being sick. It was wonderful! The room faced the water, there was a soaking jacuzzi tub I enjoyed when I was feeling better. It was so fantastic, we booked my most recent trip in the same room. Or so I thought. I booked the reservation directly online and in-person requested the ocean-facing suite. I was told that all the suites of that calibre were ocean facing.

    We were given room 306, which actually faces the main building -- Not the ocean. It can best be described as a partial-ocean view. If you open the curtains of the living room and the front bedroom, you face the main building. If you lean agains the glass and look to the right, you can see the ocean. If you're lying in bed in the front bedroom, you can see the ocean. If you're in the second bedroom, you're facing the pond behind the building (whereas both rooms had ocean views in the other room). Unfortunately we could not move rooms because supposedly all of the other rooms with the view we were hoping for were booked.

    The bedroom with the pond-view also is right next to the dumpster. Around 6:30am on Sunday morning I was awoken by the garbage collection truck.

    Also different from the original suite we had was that the jacuzzi tub had a glass shower enclosure, the door of which was opposite from the wall where the shower head is. The other room did not have an enclosure -- You stepped in openly like a normal tub. The problem with the enclosure was that you had to be in the tub to turn the water on and adjust the water (or, if you reached over), you had to expect getting wet doing so, or straining to reach). For adults as we are, this was inconvenient and frustrating, but if you're attempting to give your kids a bath, it would prove incredibly difficult, if not impossible, unless you're in the rub with them. It would've been much better if the door was on the same side as the shower head so you had access to all of the controls from outside the tub.

    Another recommendation: There are bath robes and most of the suites are carpeted, but the bathrooms of the suites are marble (or other cold material), so I recommend keeping your socks on or bringing slippers.

    All that being said, I will definitely be returning and continue to recommend this hotel for the value and the location -- Especially off season -- But I will be more specific in my future bookings.

  • weekend getaway

    We stayed at the hotel and suites for 2 nights. The front desk was great. The finders of lost things done with a sense of humor and patience. We were very happy with the excellent service. Thanks for making our stay enjoyable.

  • We could barely sleep.

    We took the largest room (2 bedrooms) in the newest building for 2 nights. We could barely sleep. Every bedroom is designed with the air vent located right above the bed. This means it will blow air on your face all night... with an unpleasant on-off sequence all night.

    When the ocean wind outside blows hard, it enters the air vents and creates a constant whistle in the room during the night.

    The room was good and new. The bathroom is great. Everything was clean. Unfortunately the air vent killed it for us.

    We also interacted with some front desk staff that had no clue about important visitors' activities in the city. One of them had never been to the Vanderbilt Mansion and could not talk to us about it... and it is the biggest tourist activity in the city...
    I blame management for not sending front desk staff to all tourist activities so they can advice guest properly.

    One telephone did not work and was not repaired during our stay.

  • Not the Best

    I truly hate to give this review. I was very excited to stay at this historical hotel. I must say this is not a typical historical hotel compared to the other ones I have stayed at.
    This hotel was over $350 for one night. Definitely overpriced! It is average at best. The room was clean, but not spectacular. The pictures do not look like the place on the inside at all. I was in the older hotel. Maybe the other part of it across the street is better.
    The fire pit they show you in the picture looks nothing like that. It is on the roof of the newer building. There is a huge hot tub up there too. I did not go in it. It looked like a giant water barrel. Unimpressive.
    The hotel is not close to the town. You will have to drive to town and park which isn't easy to park!
    The restaurant in the hotel is barely existant.
    The place smells moldy when you walk in.
    My room was directly across from the laundry. The laundry was quiet though.
    They were resurfacing the roads while I was there. It was terribly loud. The hotel was not busy. Not sure why they did not put us on the other side of the hotel. I guess at least it got us up and going early.
    A positive about the hotel is that it is across the street from the water. Parking was easy.
    The picture of the room I thought I bought had a balcony and a view. For $350+ I did not have a balcony or a view.
    I will not be returning to this hotel and unfortunately cannot recommend it. It was a disappointment to me and my friends.
