  • Impressive lobby, but unimpressive rooms

    by Bucky6478 on 2019-07-17 10:52 am

The Palmer is a large, historic hotel in the center of Chicago. The highlight of the hotel is impressive lobby and environment, as well as the gym. The lowpoint, was the room/bathroom size, noise and smell. With some improvement, the Palmer could be a fantastic destination, especially for the prices charged vs neighboring properties, but it would require some investment in the rooms.

    More detail:
    * Lobby: wonderful atmosphere in lobby, albeit a bit dark. Grand and beautiful ceiling. You can definitely spend time enjoying a coffee or cocktail here.
    * Check in: very pleasant staff ego who acknowledged Diamond status and explained benefits
    * Room: very small, despite booking king and offered upgrade. No view at 20th floor. Thin walls and doors, so easily heard neighbors. Also, the water in sink smelled of chlorine/chemical - I did not feel comfortable using and would have changed rooms if not for late hour and short stay
    * Dining: Lockwood restaurant was fairly good other than service - the server was slow and needed to ask multiple times for everything. We were also served main course while only half way through appetizers. Recommend the Trout main course and Vegetables with Burrata app.
    * Wi-Fi worked ok, but you get poor cell reception in hotel
    * Gym: Fantastic; modern, spacious and large variety of cardio and strength equipment; note, very crowded in the early mornings
    * Executive Lounge: nice, large executive lounge on 23rd floor. Breakfast was passable but limited hot options
    * Other: elevators can be quite slow, especially in the mornings

  • Be prepared to wait. And wait.

Too big. Too old. Redeemed only by a killer gym, interesting historical photos and helpful staff. It's a zoo when there are big groups in the hotel. The sheer number of rooms (1,600?) make it controlled chaos. If you get a room on floors 18 to 23 you can make new friends. That's because you'll all be waiting for the elevators and comparing your experience of how long you've waited previously. Honestly, people end up fantasizing ways to get down to the lobby and street via other means. When it's busy the swirl of people, shops, multiple entrances, and flow of activity make it almost circus-like. My room was on an interior square that made it a bit dreary. This hotel also has those annoying old fashioned mini bars that charge you if you move anything. And there was some additional display device on top of my useless minibar whose use I never figured out. There's a lot of competition in the Palmer House price range that are also in this location. The location is super, but the hotel is not worth the effort.

  • Location, Location, Location for an Historic grand hotel

    by Sara D on 2019-07-16 01:27 pm

The Palmer House is a throwback to huge hotels with much traffic within its ornate settings. You can imagine dressing for dinner and hearing celebrity stars performing. Now it is still extremely busy and fully staffed to serve its varied clientele. Our room was clean, with good linens, but the furniture wa not in perfect repair. The bathroom lacked grab bars which are pretty standard in all motels and hotels nor was there an option for a night light in the bathroom. The walls are thick, so we were pleased with the quiet. The best thing about this hotel is the fact that it is easy walking distance to major Loop attractions like Mellenium Park, the Art Institute, the Harold Washington Library and some shopping. There are now numerous restaurants right outside it's doors, as well as public transportation. There is a busy and competent concierge and a great bell hop station to check bags. For Chicago, the prices were decent. We opted to include breakfast buffet. The buffet was really outstanding with beverages served by friendly waiters.

  • HVAC doesn't work

    by praveen375 on 2019-07-16 07:16 am

Lovely old hotel ....but not very pleasant when the room AC is stuck at 65 degrees. Informed hotel maintenance who "fixed" problem but admitted it would take hours for the room to warm. Was not offered another room with a working HVAC system. Slept with a couple of layers to stay warm when it was 80+ degrees outside.

  • An aging classic in a fantastic location

by cbeard on 2019-07-15 06:57 pm

OK. We'll start with the really good things about the Palmer House:

    1) It's the oldest continually operating hotel in the US with a rich history.
    2) It is in an excellent location within reasonable walking distance of the Miracle Mile, Navy Pier, Millenium/Grant/etc Parks, Buckingham Fountain, The Museum District, Soldier Field, Lake Michigan, etc.
    3) It is basically surrounded by "L" stations (making it easy to get elsewhere in Chicago - In fact, it's less than two blocks from the Blue line which takes you to or from O'Hare Airport.
    4) It is impressive in scope and decor...especially in public spaces
    5) It is refined and you can expect great service
    6) They have the original brownie (they were invented here)

Now the not so good things. Some of these are only issues at first then they are overcome:

    1) It is a bit hard to find things in the hotel. Registration is tucked away along one side that isn't quite visible when you enter. Some common rooms, such as the Empire Room are a bit inconspicuous. Other common rooms are scattered among some of the lower floors. The elevators do have lists of the floors on which these rooms are located.
    2) The elevator bank is confusing. Some shafts service specific floors so you have to pay attention to which ones stop on which floors.
    3) At least some of the rooms show their age. Things are generally in working order, but the antiquity of the hotel is apparent. The current building was built in 1925. The rooms were designed in a different era. For the most part, the rooms are functional, but the bathrooms can be tight and closet space and storage might not be what you are used to. To be fair, it's likely an adequate trade-off for the things you will enjoy (see "good" things above).

Lastly, for Downtown Chicago, the value is very reasonable. Rooms are not overpriced considering the market in which they operate.

The Palmer House is an impressive remnant of an older, awe-inspired age. If you enjoy nostalgia, it is definitely for you. If you relish modern features, you might be disappointed.
