  • Expecting a Bit More

    by DDM137 on 2019-10-21 07:15 am

I must say I was expecting just a bit more of an upscale experience than we received during our stay but the accommodations were acceptable and comfortable. The hotel service was friendly and helpful. We checked our luggage upon arrival as we were early to the room. Once checked in, the luggage was brought to our room which was convenient but time consuming. it took about 30 mins to receive our luggage. We also requested a Do Not Disturb sign, twice, which we never received. The beds were comfortable and the room generally clean. We had to request a refrigerator and there was no coffee maker in the room. Location is great. Upscale shopping on the street level of the hotel and includes a Starbucks. Within easy walking distance of Millennium Park, Restaurants, Art Museum.

  • Chicago Marathon stay

    by MichRunner01 on 2019-10-21 05:10 am

Although expensive, this was a great place to stay for the Chicago Marathon. It was easy to walk to and from the race from this location. I used Spot Hero to reserve parking in the garage across the street.

I signed up for Hilton Honors and was able to use the WiFi with no issues and also received two bottles of water. I didn't put it to use, but also received a coupon for a drink at the bar up to $15 too.

When I got to my room I discovered there were several bath towels but nothing smaller. I received a text to ask how my room was, so I mentioned the towels and someone brought hand towels and wash clothes in minutes. I was disappointed to find that the refrigerator wasn't for my general use. It was filled with items that are on sensors so you will be charged if you remove anything. I had been hoping to actually use the fridge. Many of the outlets were too loose to actually use. Other than that, the room was great.

I decided to head home early and figured I'd be charged for the night since I was leaving fairly late - much later than the checkout time. I was thrilled that I wasn't charged! That alone won me over and I am very appreciative.

  • Not generic

This is a beautiful historic hotel with a great vibe and energy you notice as soon as you walk into the elegant lobby. Definitely not a cookie cutter chain hotel. The location is perfect. I did not notice that our room was particularly small. The bathroom was smaller than usual, but it was just my daughter and I so this was not a big deal. There are some fun classic oddities in the room (fancy embossed closet doorknob, older marble bathroom floor) and some slightly annoying modern maintenance issues (shower floor was clearly a "bath fitter" type and had air pockets underneath so felt strange underfoot). Room was very clean and mostly quiet and the beds quite comfortable. On the down side, you pay $300 a night for a room but they charge for Wi-Fi, and the only fridge in the room is a minibar with sensors that charge you if you move anything. Overall, if you enjoy a hotel with a sense of history and you get a good price, this is a fun place to stay.

I was there 2 years ago and still talk about how horrible and utterly creepy this place was. Unfortunately I was stuck there for business. This place was upgraded by Hilton? I can only imagine how gruesome it must have been before. Tiny shabby room with a disgusting bathroom. I had a memorably miserable stay. It's taken this long- 2 years- to get over it. Maybe I'm not over it yet.

  • In the middle of where you want to be

Came to Chicago for a long weekend. Palmer House is centrally in the loop. It is accessible to subway. We walked to theatre for Hamilton. Lake Shore Drive and Michigan Ave are just outside the door. And, what a lobby!!!
Nice gym, indoor pool and steam room. Friendly and helpful staff!
