Stayed at the Blennerhassett Hotel in downtown Parkersburg, West Virginia and was well pleased with the visit, both at the hotel and the town. The hotel is old, but has been extensively renovated. The rooms are comfortable, well appointed and quiet (the hotel was at capacity and one was not bothered by noises.) The complimentary breakfast is generous and delicious. The bar is friendly, fairly priced and remains open as long as customers require. The restaurant was casual with delicious food reasonably priced. The valet parking and bell service was quick and courteous. The front desk was friendly and helpful with directions and recommendations.
Loved our stay and loved the hotel.

  • A real pity....

    by ChristineH344 on 2019-11-07 12:15 am

I lived in Parkersburg many years ago and chose to go through there on my way back from TN to NY. It was great to see the town again and was looking forward to staying at the Blennerhassett since it is so historic.

I travel a lot so am no am no stranger to hotels so I don't know who the people are who left these 4 and 5-star reviews but that was not my experience I'm sorry to say.
I was SO disappointed! The hotel is old (which I love) but very tired and sorely in need of a renovation. In reading about the hotel it seems it underwent a major renovation in 1986 but trust me when I say it likely has not been touched since. Everything is so old and tired. The seal around the tub in my room was mildewed and needed to be re-caulked. The bathroom is unbelievably small for an old hotel and the overall feeling was, "Is this really clean"?

The towels were okay but the linens were of very poor thread count and the mattresses very old. The room was very lacking in electrical outlets and for some odd reason, the outlets for anything on the desk was behind a very heavy bureau which served as the stand for the TV.

Breakfast was horrible... kind of a half-hearted attempt. The room it was served in was equally as unappetizing... think it doubles as a restaurant/bar in the evening. There are large murals of Venice (????) which I guess are okay but the lighting is horrendous - bright spotlilght-type devices peeking out from behind domed formica. What was the designer thinking???!!!

I was so sad to see and experience the hotel... the bones are really good as buildings of this era usually are. The ceilings are very high; I didn't have enough time to look at the common rooms but imagine some of the original details remain but this is certainly not the case in the hotel rooms (or at least mine)... really cheap and nasty molding have replaced what were likely plaster moldings. The lamps are cheap and the lampshades completely out of date (another clue that nothing has been updated).

This hotel is the ONLY hotel in W. Va to be listed in the Historic Hotels of America, which makes the state of the hotel all the more distressing.

The title of the review Pete P left said the new management is working to restore elegance and I certainly hope it is but while they do that, why not put some small signs around explaining this. I think guests would appreciate the heads up and the effort.

I do hope the new management will restore it - if it does, I'll be the first one back.

  • Spooky

This old hotel is supposed to be haunted, and a member of our party did have an experience in the middle of the night, so..... The hotel staff is wonderful, the rooms are fine, but the bed is so high I almost had to jump to get in it.

  • New management working to restore elegance

    by Pete P on 2019-10-27 11:05 am

Wanted to stay at the Blennerhassett because of its age, location in downtown Parkersburg and original elegance. We wanted to stay in the oldest part of the hotel but those areas must have been occupied. The hotel needs work to bring it back to its former grandeur. Had dinner in the restaurant, Brunello. My wife and I disagreed on our dinners - I loved the pasta; her salmon was undercooked. Breakfast was complimentary and very good. Valet service offered since parking lot is around the back and in the next block. BTW, if staying here, make sure to explore the nearby Julia-Ann Historic District. Some of the large houses (like The Castle) need work. Others were beautifully restored.
