  • Air and water show

We booked this room for convenience to be near the air and water show. The hotel is soooo old. It looks like it hasn't been maintained for years. Probably was nice at once but a little update couldn't hurt. The room we so dark and muggy. Will never stay here again. So many other great options in Chicago.

  • Birthday weekend and air show

What an outstanding place! My husband and I had the nicest weekend at the Drake. Beautiful historically preserved hotel with all the modern amenities. I understand why so many celebrities stay here when they visit Chicago! The staff is so friendly and make everyone feel at home. I would give it 10 stars if I could. We will be back!

  • Delightful (still), historic, convenient

    by eam20500 on 2019-08-18 07:20 am

Historic ambiance seeps from the walls of this gorgeous hotel. It's hard to believe that such a reasonably priced 'Hilton' is so grand.

Located on one of the most beautiful keystone sites of the city, a small upgrade to "lake view" room will make you feel like a million bucks....or that you spent a million bucks, because the vast view of the lake, beaches, and Lake Shore Drive are mesmerizing.

One day of our visit coincided with the Air & Water Show (August) which was thrilling. We and our friends crowded around the windows to get a pilot's-eye-view of the festivities that will not soon be forgotten. But even with no such spectacle, even in the pouring rain, the view was mesmerizing.

Our room was bright, contemporary, very clean, very comfortable, and had all the typical amenities expected. A clean modern bathroom had ample room.

In addition to all of this, what permeates the Drake (my second stay) is a desire to meet the needs of guests, to provide any information, to make everyone feel comfortable and welcome. As a well-known entity, The Drake is copiously frequented by cabs, Uber, Lyft and other transportation, making up for its distance from L stops (check route maps)

Of course, the independently owned shops below (galleries, convenience, floral, Cartier) are overpriced (a 16 oz bottle of soda was $3.50) - I assume their rent is very high. Walk past them, enjoy windows shopping, and then be sure not to miss the gem Cafe on Oak for breakfast. Three amazing versions of eggs Benedict ($12), including Joe Dimaggio's namesake, or a delicious buffet ($24) that included an omelet station were hits with my 20-something son and his ravenously hungry roommates.

A wonderful stay in the Windy City...hard to beat!

  • A classic in a perfect location downtown

by HenryKopytka on 2019-08-17 05:31 pm

Hard to beat The Drake. Very reminiscent of the old Hilton Chicago, before they modernized the rooms.

Here for a conference, was pleasantly surprised by the size of the rooms....I'd only been here for events in the past, never spending the night. The bathroom was smartly decorated, and the room itself held much of the charm original
    To this classic hotel.

Valet parking is $71/night - which is in line with nearby parking outfits - Hilton really needs to subsidize some of this cost for actual hotel guests (saw plenty of non guests utilizing the parking service).

Do take the time to walk around the hotel, there are many levels and books and crannies you'll be sorry you missed if you do not!

  • Classic Gold Coast

by capposcasa on 2019-08-17 02:05 pm

We tried this hotel as it was the closest Hilton or Marriott to our son and his girlfriend (we were using points, so it was pretty inexpensive). The location is great, the ambiance pretty classic. Rooms were a little small, but for an older hotel, it was very lavish. Our best day trip was renting the City International bikes for $3 each and riding along Lake Michigan.
