  • Satisfied customer, even with construction taking place

    by Fred G on 2018-10-13 08:14 am

Respecting everyone's is my take on my recent experience at this hotel:
I booked this room through a deal from a different site, and was at 1st a little hesitant due to the reviews about construction. So, yes, there is construction going on, but if you are the type of traveler/tourist who wakes up semi-early and goes to explore the town and returns in the afternoon/evening, then you will not notice it greatly. Of the four days stayed in the hotel, only one day I actually noticed it, but it was on my way out to do the tourist thing. One thing I can say, that it appears the lower floors suffer more from the noise. If you are the type of traveler who wants to wake up late every day, or stay in the hotel the whole day, then this might not be the place for you.
Most of the trips to the monuments took about 15-20 minutes via Uber/Lyft, and there are also cabs who are stationed right in from the hotel. The staff was friendly as well. Also, it is true about the continental breakfast, which by the way, it is $10.00. Is it worthy? I guess this will be up to you. However, there are plenty of places to eat in the surrounding neighborhood, which took about 10-15 minutes by walking, and also a nearby CVS and Banks should you need one. However, most places accept credit cards only.
I didn't give the room a full five star because the TV is small for the room, and some of the nobs fell off the dresser. However, in my opinion, this was a minor issue. The room was quiet, and you can see from the pictures what it looks like to give you an idea.

  • Very disappointing

    by Chris B on 2018-10-13 01:27 am

Having travelled thousands of miles to visit Washington DC for the first time and expecting to stay in a fine old 4-star hotel, we were very disappointed to find ourselves staying in a part building site/part temporary pop-up hotel which, to be honest, should not qualify for a 4-star rating at present.

I was not advised when I booked our stay that significant renovations were being carried out and that a number of services were not available. I think this is dishonest; potential guests should be warned about this before booking.

There is currently no restaurant or bar, instead there are a number of tables and a temporary shelving unit set up in the old ballroom, a beautiful room, but certainly not a restaurant or bar. A restricted menu is available in the bar in the evening, but it is not very enticing - better to eat out.

Breakfast, a not too bad help yourself Continental affair, was also set up in this room each morning, although surely a 4-star hotel can do better than plastic cutlery and plates!

The room in which we stayed was very comfortable, if a little tired, but there were interconnecting doors to two other rooms with very poor sound-deadening capabilities such that conversations in both rooms were rather intrusive at night, as was the noisy a/c.

During the day there was heavy drilling going on somewhere in the hotel, although we were out most of the time so it was not too inconvenient.

Reception was also a temporary affair set up in the entrance to the ballroom. The reception staff were friendly, and in the main so were the rest of the staff although difficult to understand at times as clearly English was not their first language.

The location of the hotel is good, being a fairly comfortable 20-30 minute walk to the White House, etc, but parking at $49 per night is a rip off. One of my pet hates is hotels which charge an arm and a leg for you to park your car; in my opinion those hotels which either do not charge for parking or give significant discounts for guest parking have got it right - they value your custom and recognise that free or inexpensive car parking is a service which they should provide to try to encourage you to visit again.

  • No coffee!

    by Donna L on 2018-10-09 01:41 am

They don't put coffee out in the lobby until 630am. Are You kidding me! I have a quarter of a days work done then! Put it out by 5am or dont bother. What a tease to check in and see all those flavor syrups sitting next to empty coffee thermos and then not be able to get any coffee in the morning either!

nice location and front desk area but the room wasn't a 4 star one, very old feel which i wouldn't mind but the bathroom was a little too old, like the wallpaper was a little ruined and also the bathtub was a little ruined

  • Great hotel, Great location

    by Mjo1279 on 2018-09-29 07:38 am

The Fairfax is a beautiful hotel with a lot of history in the heart of Washington DC. It was a great location and surprisingly good value for money. The room was comfortable, clean and well decorated. The hotel itself is in easy walking distance to the metro and easy walking distance to other sites around the city. They hotel was undergoing renovations at the time of our stay so breakfast was held in a ballroom and was a flat $10 rate per person for a fairly well stocked buffet. The front desk staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. It was certainly fantastic value. Overall this was a great stay.
