My husband and I went to DC on a last minute trip to do research at the Holocaust Museum. We found the Fairfax at Embassy Row on TripAdvisor and got a deal through Priceline for $81 dollars a night. Considering that they charge $49 a night for parking (all hotels in DC charge an arm and leg for parking) I figured that this was a good deal, plus it had so many positive reviews. I've stayed in Travelodges that cost less and were much nicer then this hotel!
The room was teeny tiny! Barely big enough for the bed they put in it. The dresser had drawer pulls missing, the lamps didn't work and the toilet was literally less then 6 inches from the bathtub. The sink in the bathroom was so close to the toilet it was almost impossible to sit down on it. Only one elevator was working which made getting to our room or the lobby a 10 minute ordeal. The valets were very helpful except for the one on Monday morning, who refused to allow my husband to bring our bags to the car prior to us checking out. During the weekdays there was noisy construction going on right outside our window. The cleaning staff banged on our door before 8:30am on Monday morning. We told them we were sleeping and she kept asking us what time we would be out of the room. We told her 'later' and she demanded to know what time we would be out of the room. We then told her 'at checkout time'. To top it all off we found a centipede type bug crawling across the floor. My husband caught it and I told him to take it to the front desk. When we returned I asked him what their reaction was. He told me they said 'it is harmless'. See the photos I posted if you want to see the type of bug they said was 'harmless'.

The only positive thing I can say about this hotel is that they have pretty chandlers in the lobby area.
Be warned if you choose to stay at the Fairfax!

  • Avoid this hotel

I was here, blessedly, for only one night. There is construction going on, making this unpleasant hotel nearly dangerous. You enter to a strange, unsigned registration area with desks and guess where you are supposed to go. One of two super slow elevators is out of order. The room is nothing special. The bar/restaurant has tables/chairs, but at 7:30 on a Saturday none of them are set. There is what later turns out to be a waitress watching Futbol with the help while the bartender stands behind a temporary bar that looks like it's set for a wedding reception not a 4 star hotel on H0+wire. "Is this place open?" Yes, apparently so. If you have the good fortune to have your room face the alley you are serenaded by delivery and removal trucks all evening. Most dangerously, while in the bar, the evacuation alarm goes off. The staff isn't moving. Call my party up in the room, you guys coming down? "For what?" The alarm! "We don't hear a thing." After three minutes, fire truck shows up and things quiet down. I had already taken the stairs down after getting tired of waiting on the elevator only to be greeted at the ground floor exit with a "Do not use this door - construction" sign. I opened it anyway and there was no clear way to get out of the stairwell and into the ground floor to exit. Combine that with the alarm that doesn't really alarm and you have a dangerous setting for guest confusion and possible harm in case of evacuation (which is what the alarm said to do). So many things to sort out in this hotel!

We're very sorry that your stay at our hotel fell short of your expectations. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience you encountered during the alarm and for the lack of communication. It's clear we missed a key opportunity to keep you informed and put your mind at ease. We also regret that you didn't notice our directional signage that is posted on each floor. Your stay was not representative of a typical visit and we hope you'll consider giving us another chance to make a better impression and ask that you visit us again after our renovation reveal.

  • Good hotel in a great city

    by CDM52 on 2018-09-22 11:40 am

We had an excellent suite for our two-night stay in Washington. The hotel is being refurbished with the main entrance closed and the bar and restaurant moved to what appears to be the ballroom. Limited choice if you want to eat in for the evening but there are restaurants 10 minutes walk away. Breakfast was good value.

    Owner Response
We're very happy to learn that you enjoyed your suite and had a pleasant two-night stay at The Fairfax at Embassy Row. It's wonderful that our breakfast got your days of sightseeing off to a good start. We hope you'll stay with us again the next time you're visiting DC.

  • Clean, Close To Restaurants

    by Royce F on 2018-09-22 10:44 am

We were a packaged tour of 17 and this was the hotel. Renovations were not an imposition but not restaurant on site, except for the continental breakfast cold cuts and rolls provided. Still, it worked. Clean, generally friendly. No complaints.

I will say that I've stayed at a lot of hotels and the staffing is very important and your staff is top notch! Always friendly and ready to help....from the front desk staff, to Rama who always seems to be the most helpful person I've ever met to the bell captain. I love staying at the Fairfax and always feel like I'm visiting family when I return! Keep up the great work!
