  • Step back in time to casual elegance

    by Retriever32 on 2019-12-07 03:43 am

The GI is a masterpiece from the neo classical main building and the surrounding craftsman style bungalows, everything here is cheery and bright. The resort staff is friendly, knowledgeable and always ready to assist with quick shuttle rides on the golf carts. Our trip was golf and beach and fun: the golf course is in pristine shape and the fast and tru Bermuda greens will challenge any skill level: the course is playable and walkable with scenic views of beautiful Charlotte Harbor with a 12 mile vista across the Harbor back to the mainland. The golf staff treats you like a member from the minute you arrive; rental clubs are available but suggest you "ship sticks" if you are an accomplished golfer, the bag guys are very accommodating with the "ship sticks" service and of course, store your clubs with them for a small fee and then you can bike to the course every day (try your hand at pedaling your bike over the old waterway bridge for a nice little workout) whew!?

The best advice: rent bikes and frequent the town for its super charming slightly "shabby chic" look and feel, it is so nice to see the old Florida charm preserved, not renovated or gentrified, just as it was. Hudson's grocery is a must stop for meats and cheeses and prepared meals to go if you want them. It's old wooden floors and quaint "front porch" atmosphere will make you forget about the prices, remember you are in an Island!

Can't say enough about Temptation and "The Temp" bar for Pre dinner drinks where the tarpon guides hang out with locals and tourists and the triple tail and hog fish entrees and simply amazing. It's 50's feel is authentic right down to the waitresses with flip up hairdos and the authentic working cigarette machine behind the door marked "cigs"? : don't miss passing through the storage area behind the bar to "the Caribbean room" for another super charming little pub.

The Pink Elephant is a must do: dine alfresco and try the yellow tail snapper friend whole!

I wouldn't necessarily avoid Miller's (at the Boca Grande Marina)but if you need to skip one; that is the one to skip, pretty basic over fried seafood and loud atmosphere due to bad acoustics)

The is not a cheap or budget vacation; expect to be treated like a "member" and you will pay for it; but surrounded by casual elegance all the way around.

We took a day boat charter over to Cabbage Key and you can find my review posted under Cabbage Key: would highly recommend that with Capt Will; he is knowledgeable and full of historic facts (ask him about the history of Useppa Island).

The little town has much to see, full of nice people enjoying there retirement and fun places to dine and relax and just be in the moment in paradise.

Also recommend the Outlet at the Inlet for al fresco breakfast at the docks behind the charming little motel (the western omelet is a plateful: split it with your dining partner) ride you bikes there around sun up for a great way to start your day on the town bikes path converted from old railroad bed)

Expect to be pampered in old Florida the way "it used to be"

Final tip: ride your bike over to Whiddens Marina , a shabby old authentic working marina with its own museum and zoo: yes it has a zoo! Be sure to see this place, as "progress" will surely take this place out in the next decade (hope not!)

    Have fun and travel welll!

  • Historic and Well-Maintained Inn

by Clawboot on 2019-12-06 08:17 am

We rented a four-bedroom cottage (Villa) here. The cottage was exceptionally clean, spacious, well-appointed, and perfect for our stay. The Inn is spectacular in terms of maintaining its old Florida charm and furnishings. And the service, at all times, is truly outstanding. Of course, all this comes at a high price, but you'll never forget your stay.

  • Unique Old Florida Hotel

Just spent one night in this hospitable, immaculate hotel. Definitely returning. Beautiful location with lovely accommodations. On the Gulf of Mexico. Beach club with large pool on the water. Gorgeous sunrise on the east and beautiful sunset on the west.

  • Old Florida At Its Finest!

    by ALB63 on 2019-11-17 02:27 pm

Recently, as part of a group, my husband and I had lunch in the main dining room of the Gasparilla Inn. What a charming, elegant inn in a perfect location! It has old Florida feel but updated with all the modern conveniences of today. The main dining room is large and beautifully decorated. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive. The buffet lunch was delicious with plenty to choose from. The dessert table had a variety of tasty treats. There were many comfortable sitting areas throughout the inn and lovely gift shops to browse in after our lunch. It was a lovely place for lunch and would be the perfect place to return for a stay at the inn.

  • Beach Club Restaurant

The food was very good. The service was attentive. The view was priceless. Sitting on the patio overlooking the Gulf of Mexico made this a special place to have lunch on a warm sunny day when it was 30 degrees in Chicago.
