  • Lovely outside and nice bar/reception. the rooms.....

by SaintmarkLondon on 2019-06-16 02:16 pm

This was once a great hotel, grand probably. It's in a popular location, plus is far from the worst!! most of the larger hotels are worse, the Marriott etc. But it is now run down, needs millions spending on the rooms and spa/business rooms.

    - Staff: very good, pleasant and friendly.
    - common area; the bar and reception were stunning, really nice to sit in. Sun comes in most of the day.
    - The pool and gym are late 90's. Fine for basic work out, but not if you are used to newer laces.
    - Rooms: they really are old now. I mean the bed was nice, the TV fine and the rooms adequate. But the bathrooms and general decor are poor, the bathrooms in particular.
    - Cafe: part of the upgrade common area, was nice. Good coffee as it happens, plus snacks.
    - Food: the breakfast was very average.
    - bar: lots of choice, good overall. cocktails, not the best but ok.

  • A nice place but neccessarily a peaceful oasis.

This wasn't a bad place to stay although we found it to be not the best value for money. They seem to have have a big wedding / event business so the hotel was very busy with these larger groups going in and out. The location can't be beat to enjoy Newport. The bed and room was comfy and well appointed. Service was a little overly efficient but still very good. The dinner was decent but uninspired. It might be a great off season place to consider.

  • Horrible

This place is terrible. First room we had wreaked of black mold smell and second was marginally better. Room had tiny black ants everywhere and the bathroom was dark, depressing and the fan sounded like a jet plane. Staff is rude, accommodating and useless. Do yourself a favor and spend your $1000 elsewhere.

  • Excellent Hospitality

My wife and I stayed here for our baby moon. While the check in is normally 4:00 pm, they took great care to ensure we could check in early to get ready for a gathering that started at 4:00. Then to our pleasant surprise, when we checked in, we were upgraded to the Breakers Suite!

This really helped make it an extra special time for us and a truly memorable weekend. And also, the hotel is beautiful and fantastic even without the extra special experience and accommodations we had!

  • Not as good as it was eight years ago...

My last stay at Hotel Viking was in 2011 and it was a fabulous experience. We stayed in the main part of the hotel in a beautifully decorated room.

My 2019 Hotel Viking experience was average at best. For this trip I traveled with my mom and cousin and we stayed in a room with two double beds in the side wing of the hotel. Our room had one tiny window. Perhaps to make up for the lack of sunlight, the room had a connecting room that was also ours to use. This room was windowless but was outfitted with a sofa, three chairs, a tv, and it had a closet and bathroom. Our thought was that no one would stay in it without a window, so they added it to our room. This was great for us because it gave us a seating area and an extra bathroom to use.

This room wasn't decorated at all like the room I stayed in in 2011. It was nice, but not decorated nearly as stylishly.

The mattresses in this room should be replaced with something more comfortable. Definitely not a luxury hotel mattress.

When I stayed at Hotel Viking in 2011, a coffee maker was in my room. You now have to request a coffee maker. We found housekeeping to be very stingy with cups. All three days of my stay I had to either call for more cups or I had to forage beside meeting rooms where coffee stations were set up.

I was VERY DISAPPOINTED on my first full day in Newport to arrive back to my room to find that we had not received room service. When I called the front desk, the young lady that I spoke with didn't seem to care but did ask what I needed. She had towels and coffee sent to our room. Again, no cups which required foraging. Meanwhile, I received a text asking how my stay was. I responded with the above and was given a free cup of coffee from the market. Gee thanks...

The next day we did receive room service but it wasn't what I would expect from a "fancy" hotel. Coffee cups were not disposed of, the bed was made with the dust ruffle tucked in with the sheet, and more coffee cups were not left. Why is this place so stingy with coffee cups?

We also ran out of toilet paper and had to call for it. I would expect housekeeping to automatically leave an extra roll when they see that the extra roll has been used.

No "extras" provided such as shower caps, q-tips. Not sure what you get for the resort fee that is charged for each day.
