  • Menger Hotel January 2019

    by srmarshall2018 on 2019-01-21 02:06 pm

This was our second time to stay at this historic hotel in 9 months, and our second visit was as delightful as our first. We stayed for a week in early January. The hotel's Christmas decorations were still up for the first few days of our stay, as were most of the holiday lights along the River Walk. Our room was on the third floor of the historic wing, with a balcony overlooking Alamo Plaza. Because it also overlooked the street, it was a little bit noisy, but it was a fair trade-off for the quality of the room and its location. Every member of the staff that we met was friendly and competent. We ate twice at the Colonial Room restaurant, and both meals were excellent. We enjoyed the Sunday brunch, which was really spectacular. We had breakfast on our last morning, and Araceli (sp?) served us and was exceptionally friendly. After two stays at the Menger, it's hard to imagine visiting San Antonio and staying anywhere else. We can't recommend it enough to anyone who hasn't stayed there.

We enjoyed a wonderful stay at the Menger Hotel. Well-appointed rooms, beautiful and formal Lobby. Excellent Restaurant and Bar. Outdoor heated Swimming Pool and Jacuzzi.
So much history. Teddy Roosevelt recruited his Rough Riders from the patrons at the Menger Bar. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum had a studio here.

Good prices. Valet Parking only. Close proximity to the Alamo and Riverwalk.

  • Historic Hotel in San Antonio

Very nice hotel with a very nice historic setting. The people are very nice and accommodating, and they each can tell you some of the hotel's history. Very nice dining area, with a great Breakfast buffet and Omelet Station.

  • New Years Eve Wedding

    by maxw55 on 2019-01-16 07:24 pm

Attended a wedding around the corner at Saint Joseph's Downtown Catholic Church (Worth a visit as it is a Painted Church from 1868) and home to the San Antonio Liederkranz founded 1892, and is the church choir. (Full disclosure.... I sang at the wedding of one of our members.)

Then we walked over to The Menger Hotel for the reception. They had a lovely Ballroom with good mood lighting and sound system. It was a good size for the group but appeared it could be expanded. Food was good and service was very nice and appears a good time was had by all.

I had secured a room for the night as I did not wish to drive home on NYE. The room was a Deluxe King and was was nice except the mattress felt well worn but I was so tired it just did not matter. Toom was well appointed but furniture was older, sturdy but small scale says I, at 6'4".

Breakfast was nice the next morning, but brunch was not available as it was sold out. Good thing we came down early as the hotel gave us no warning of same.

We enjoyed looking around the hotel at the Historical Memorabilia.

My only real warning does not involve the Hotel, but a Sneaky Website, which after reading about it online has taken advantage of many people including me.

I thought I was on the Menger Hotel website and my email reflected Menger Hotel. Only later looking at the "detail" section dropdown after the fact, that it was actually GETAROOM.COM. It appears to a reasonable individual to be The Menger Hotel. But the Menger Hotel was not involved.
GETAROOM added $96 for Taxes. It did not appear unusual on NYE for the room to be $300. But it was not as the Menger is slightly removed from the NYE action. I started noticing these things and did not realize GETAROOM was involved until my wife handed me the check in paperwork.
Upon review, I noted the dropdown email address. Then I looked up and found numerous complaints of people who could not get their money back even when they cancelled their res within the specified time frame which was why I booked at that rate in the first place.

I am not a novice at getting rooms online, but I got taken for a ride on this one. Please note this does not appear to me to be the fault of the Menger Hotel. But that GETAROOM.COM appears to be consistently using deceptive practices on a nationwide basis. The online complaints are vitriolic, and allege no help and some abuse at the hands of the website offices. So I am not wasting my time in calling them. Life is too short. But keep an eye out to be sure where your computer takes you. Again, I never knew I was not on the hotel website.

I think I read a Trip Advisor review of the hotel and it appears GETAROOM uses Trip Advisor reviews for hotels. And when I go to, it uses a similar background and gives the same feeling as Trip Advisor. I can only suppose they are mirroring the different websites. Many complaints allege they noticed no change thinking they were on THE HOTEL website for whichever hotel at which they wished to stay.
I hope Trip Advisor will take note of and take some action. In the meantime I will be writing the Texas Attorney General and the local DOJ Prosecutors Office. The number of online complaints appears enough to consider RICO or similar charges.
