  • Just came to view the history of this hotel

    by Marta E on 2019-03-23 06:52 am

i came to get a drink because there were so many nonTexans in the Alamo and the lines were long. the bartender was very nice. All I had was a coke. I really wanted to see the lobby of this historic masterpiece. Saw many cool artifacts on the way. There are a few shops, but was most inspired by the architecture and antiques that are still in the hotel to this day. I do not know if I will ever stay here. Just come in here to take a look when visiting San Anto

  • Our stay at the Menger

We absolutely loved our time at the Menger. We have stayed there several times over the years and hope to stay there again. We have stayed in a suite in the past but couldn't afford that this time, we stayed in a room in the old part this time. Our room was lovely and we had plenary of room.

Fantastic Sunday brunch set in a gorgeous, historic hotel. I didn't have the opportunity to stay as a guest, but I enjoyed just walking around and looking at the building and grounds. I hope to return very soon!

This is our favorite treat to ourselves. We love coming to The Menger. So gracious, warm courteous. The Colonial is outstanding, breakfast brunch is amazing. Your every wish is their desire. Treat yourself!

  • Beautiful property.

My husband and I stayed here in October, celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. I requested a balcony room in the Victorian section, and we got it! I loved that room. You can tell when leaving the newer part of the hotel going to the Victorian section because of the smell and of course, the decor. I felt like I had stepped back in time and was walking through a Victorian doll house. The only thing that might throw one off if staying in one of the very few balcony rooms (Victorian section at least) is the outside noise. We had a guy serenading us for HOURS one afternoon, lol! My husband didn't think it was funny, but that's the downfall of having this VERY cool room. Didn't see any ghosts. :)

We had breakfast in the Colonial Restaurant each morning. We had the buffet included in our room price, so only had that. There were good selections and if you'd like to try the Mango ice cream, just ask. It IS delicious!

I loved the Menger and how convenient it is to everything we wanted to see during this short stay. We walked everywhere except for when we had lunch at Mi Tierra at the Mexican market. We called a Lyft driver and it wasn't too pricey. Maybe $7 plus tip each way?

Even if you don't book this hotel.. go in and see it. I felt I was walking into a Vegas hotel, it was so beautiful! Beautiful courtyard as well. Victorian furniture in that particular section.. and the elevator in that section smells of cigar! I thought that was an added touch.I wondered if they had a little spritzer in there to make it that way. Also, check out the Menger Bar while there. It's lovely! I love everything about this hotel. Oh! And Remember the Alamo! It's such a very short walk from the hotel and we visited throughout our stay. I've been there many times before, being a Texan, but it was my husband's first time and he was in "awe" of all the history. To imagine what they went through and how they gave it their all. Proud to be a Texan! Gotta see it at night too.

    Owner Response
Dear Texas Tornado - I loved your review, thank you for sharing your experience.

Our Colonial Room restaurant has been a part of the hotel since it's opening in1859 and we just celebrated 160 years in existence and famous for its Mango Ice Cream, glad you enjoyed it.

The Humidor Cigar Shop used to be located in the 1859 Victorian section of the hotel for many years, hence the cigar smell. The Humidor decided to move their store to their North side location. Mi Tierra is also a San Antonio landmark that has been in business for almost 75 years, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Thanks again and we hope to have your back for another adventure to our Historic Menger Hotel.
