The Middlebury Inn has been in continuous operation as a hotel since 1827, arguably one of the longest of any hotel in the country. It opened as the Vermont Hotel, a brick ‘public house’ for Nathan Wood. The adjacent Porter Mansion, a stately brick home, was built in 1825 and named for the William Porter family. The mansion’s elegantly curved staircase, intricate moldings, and Victorian-style guest rooms complement the main building’s Federalist architecture, with columned ballroom and lobby, as well as varied meeting and sitting spaces. While providing quality service, warm hospitality, and modern amenities, the Middlebury Inn has carefully restored architecture and interior detailing to preserve its unique, historic charm and grace among Vermont inns.
