  • TERRIBLE WAY TO START A VACATION

    by 6565mk on 2019-05-23 09:14 pm

We made our reservation way in advance and we were so excited to stay at the plaza!!! We arrived very late and tired and just wanted a place to sleep. Not only were our rooms not available, but they got our reservation all wrong!!! The rooms were not connecting like we had requested and had to spend our night sorting our clothes from the bags because we had to split up. Traveling with kids, we always ask for connecting rooms as there is no way kids can sleep alone. My husband and I had to sleep separate as did the kids. The kids were so upset since they had plans on watching a show together on the one iPad we brought. They did not have double beds like we had requested so they gave us a rollaway that barely fit in the room. And the manager kept saying that the rollaway was free of charge. Huh!!! Did he want to charge me for his mistake?? The hotel is old and outdated and so are the rooms. The hallways have a smell that resembles bug repellant which made me sneeze all night. We were beyond disappointed with it all. The manager kept saying that there was nothing he could do, although it didn't seem like there was anyone else staying in the hotel. Trust me, don't stay here. If you are expecting a 5 star, go to mandarin oriental, but do not stay here.

  • Fabulous Hotel and Staff.

    by Helen S on 2019-05-23 04:04 am

The Plaza is an icon and it was so much fun to stay here. The staff, especially the wonderful gentlemen who waited on us in the Palm Court at breakfast were amazing and attended to everything perfectly. The room was large, especially by New York standards and the bathroom amenities were awesome, even the shower had temperature control. I would definitely come back.

  • Afternoon Tea

by Soddie on 2019-05-22 11:51 am

Last day in NY and decided to treat ourselves to afternoon tea at the Plaza hotel. Yes it's a little expensive but it's not every day you do this so worth splashing the cash on. The food was delicious and the service from our waiter Elvis was excellent. You would be hard pushed to find such a beautiful setting to enjoy an afternoon tea.

  • Faded Glory

by ramblindave on 2019-05-22 08:53 am

The Plaza has a lot of history and is located at one of the most inconic spots in all of Manhattan. I am sure there are certain people that enjoy the tradition and the look of Victorian England and the quaint dress of the era. For the rest of us it seems a little odd and over the top.

Our room was spacious with a disappointing view of the other side of the building. I was hoping for a view of Central Park but that appears to be for permanent residents.
The bed was excellent albeit with too many covers resulting in difficulty in trying to get a good ambient temperature in the room and not getting too warm under the covers. The bathroom was also spacious with separate sections for toilet and shower but doors that did not really reflect privacy.

Everything was painted in gold trim which felt quite garish. The rooms are reaching a point of disrepair that is worrying. The bathroom door had a black streak across it. Much of the gild was flaked or fading and the carpet was frayed. The gym was an afterthought and was smaller then any gym I've seen at a hotel of this size with minimal equipment. The entire hotel had a cloying soapy smell that way annoying.

The Plaza needs a new designer to come in to keep some of the tradition intact but to modernize the look. Currently it feels like Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard looking for a time once when it was the most famous starlet in Hollywood but that time has long passed.

First the good news is that the staff are very helpful and seem to truly enjoy helping the guests.

    Dear ramblindave,

Thank you for taking the time to share your honest feedback. Firstly, thank you for your glowing comments regarding our colleagues who delight in delivering an exceptional experience for our guests. Many of our Plaza guest rooms feature a city or courtyard view, while a select number of our Legacy Suites do feature striking views of Central Park. We are disheartened to know that our style blending traditional New York elegance with contemporary design was not in-line with your expectation, and have shared your concerns regarding the condition of the room with our respective teams for follow-up. Should your travels bring you back to The Plaza, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at Michael.Weinstein@fairmont.com so that I may oversee your stay.

  • Historical Hotel

by Pettite on 2019-05-21 08:30 am

The Plaza Hotel is currently being renovated as noted by scaffolding on the exterior on the lower floors. Still, the hotel is beautiful, and this is an iconic spot because in 1964, The Beatles stayed at The Plaza Hotel when they first visited NYC and performed on the Ed Sullivan Show. There are expensive and unique restaurants located within the hotel itself, and you don't have to stay at the hotel in order to enjoy these unique dining spots.
