  • Location canât be beat

    by parkerw2014 on 2018-09-17 03:28 am

If you are looking to feel the pulse of old Kansas City, this hotel and walking access to the Country Club Plaza shopping district is a great match. Especially during the holidays when the Plaza is lit with festive lights is the the place to be. Rooms are a little dated and the gym is small. But old can be comfy too.

  • Lovely hotel, a little old.

    by jlbran84 on 2018-09-07 01:39 pm

I checked in early and the person who checked me in was lovely although a little new to the process. She struggled with checking me in. She offered me an upgrade on the 1st floor that was ready immediately, or I could wait and be in an upgrade on the top floor. I opted to wait. She called an hour later, after I had already left, and informed me that my room was ready. When I returned after lunch, there was a new gentleman at the front desk, and he was great and efficient. The elevators were SO slow, but other than that, check-in was smooth. The suite was spacious and quiet, and the AC worked great (a rarity these days!). The view of the Plaza was nice. The room was a little old and musty smelling, and the bathroom was tiny, but otherwise, I have no complaints about the room. I didn't use any of the other amenities in the hotel. I will certainly consider staying here again when I have to come to KC!

  • Great King Suite Walking Distance From The Plaza

    by Vacationer9898 on 2018-09-03 05:04 pm

The Raphael is everything it is cracked up to be. Very nice hotel with great service, with a lot of history. The hotel is quiet, the rooms are nice, WIFI fast, with nicest towels ever as well as good toiletries ! Free valet as well as free self park. Ground level parking deck is tight, off a side street behind the Raphael. To get to top deck, which is not covered, you have to go to another street. Big SUV's are definitely tight in Raphael parking. Biggest bathtub I have ever been in, with a tub shower. Excellent water pressure, especially for an older boutique hotel.

Workers are friendly and knowledgeable. Chaz is a restaurant/bar in the hotel which is quite nice, rustic, with fair prices. Walking distance from the plaza is very convenient and is in a great area just to take a stroll and enjoy the scenery. There is no swimming pool at this facility

We will definitely stay at the Raphael next time our travels bring us to KC area.

For marriott gold and platinum, wifi is free, and fast, no M club or concierge lounge, but they do give free continental breakfast at Chaz

  • Romantic getaway.

The Raphael is a great place to get away for a weekend. Great rooms and atmosphere. Great food at the Chaz Restaurant. We've visited the Raphael many times over the years and always enjoy our stay. Don't miss the live jazz in the bar!

  • Nice stay in the Plaza area of Kansas City

by ysuindy on 2018-08-30 12:59 am

My son and I spent two nights at The Raphael while in Kansas City for a baseball game, some general sightseeing and a lot of barbecue.

The Raphael was converted from an apartment building to a hotel many years ago. The setting across Brush Creek from Country Club Plaza is more of a residential area with apartments and condominiums. The shops at The Plaza are an easy walk from the hotel.

We had a two double room that looked out on The Plaza. The placement of the bathroom resulted in a L shape for the rest of the room. There was a sofa, chair, table and TV in the smaller part of the L. As someone who often falls asleep each night while sitting up, this helped me get a couple of good nights sleep. I'm not someone who does well getting in to bed before I'm tired, so having a chair or sofa in a separate area is something I look for in a room.

The air conditioning vent is in the corner of the room near the sofa, but it did a nice job of cooling the room on a day with Excessive Heat Warnings. The temperature was surely helped with the many windows in the room facing north and avoiding direct sunlight.

The bathroom was one of the largest I've seen in a hotel room. Plenty of room to move around and a shower with plenty of hot water and good water pressure.

The room had a safe in the closet (nice for our electronics), a microwave and a refrigerator. There was a separate refrigerator for the mini-bar - you need to call the front desk to get a key for the mini-bar.

I'm typically a Hampton / Hilton Garden Inn / Hyatt Place type of guy. The Raphael is a large step up from those hotels. The bellman and front desk exude a level of luxury I'm not used to.

We were not in the hotel long enough to use most of the amenities.

A couple of downsides to note

The three elevators in the hotel are painfully slow. They take a long time to arrive and move slowly. Housekeeping also uses the same hotels. We started using the East side elevator bank as there are two elevators on that side combined to only one elevator on the west side.

Parking is free (which is always nice) and is located in a parking structure behind the hotel. The structure has an upper level deck and a covered lower level. There is no access between the two levels, The upper level (open to the elements) is accessed from West 48th Street. The lower level (protected from the elements) is accessed from Wornall Road. Access to the hotel from the upper level is through a door at the back of the hotel. There is no direct access from the lower level to the hotel. You need to walk out to the street and walk around to the front of the hotel. You need your room key to enter the parking structure. Valet parking is available.

A band was playing in front of the hotel Friday evening - nice touch.

All in all I would stay here again.
