  • Worth a look around but not worth the stay

    by Ashley P on 2018-09-16 09:20 am

My company thought they were doing me a great favor booking me at this posh looking hotel, and I'll admit that the lobby, the basement and the Oak Room (from what I could through a crack in the door) are impressive looking, gorgeous and interesting, but the room left a lot to be desired. I extended my 5 day business trip by 3 days, booking the remainder of my stay at the Hilton Garden Inn down the block and the cost was half and the room much more to my liking. Just bc a hotel is older doesn't mean it has to be dumpy, that's the main take away from this place. My room felt old and run down, and the floor always had this weird soggy feeling, couldn't find a leak anywhere though, and the bathroom was impossibly small. It was very disappointing after the grandiose feeling when you walk in. I was hesitant to complain bc this was booked through work and my husband thought I should not make a fuss, but if I had been paying myself I would have been very upset. I booked the free shuttle from the airport and they never showed to pick up, I called 5 days in advance and was confirmed. Waited over an hour, even called the hotel to inquire if I had missed it somehow, even though I was early to to pick up point, valet seemed unconcerned about me sitting there waiting and provided not ETA. Eventually I got fed up, saw a van picking people up for Embassy Suites, inquired with that driver and he offered me and my husband a free ride, and very fortunate they are RIGHT DIRECTLY ACROSS the street from the Seelbach. We tipped him very well! I did complain about the lack of ride, and was offered 2 free drinks and an appetizer in the bar. The drinks we're very good, the service and atmosphere top notch, I do recommend the lobby bar. The young man at check in was very friendly (he has 2 dogs, very personable and welcoming) but another younger man I delt with later in the week was more coarse, and when I asked a question about soap in my room he asked what I wanted "him" to do about it, AND that he shouldn't know how to handle a soap issue bc "he's only a college student" which just baffled my mind. We did request a tour, which you can do with the concierge, and he asked us to wait for him upstairs while he finished with another group who was almost done, 20 mins and he'd be with us, we waited an hour, we enjoyed the space and didn't mind the extra time bc we were looking forward to the experience, but he never showed up, it was later in the day, so my husband assumed maybe it was quitting time, and he just left, which if true is very rude. I was going to say something at the desk but the young man who couldn't handle soap was working so I said forget about it. I will say this, colleagues who were also in town stayed at The Galt, and they said it was motel quality at best, so I should be thankful for what I got. The location to 4th St Live was a bonus.

    Dear Ashley P,

We appreciate the feedback on your recent stay at the property. I'm very sorry for the service you received with Valet and the Front Desk. This is not characteristic of the staff or the hotel. I will be working through the issues with their department heads to correct the behaviors. We hope you will give us another chance in the future if the need arises.

We are in the early process of a major renovation of the property. When the new ownership and management company took possession of the hotel in November, we knew it needed to be remodeled. It will be an extensive job but it will be beautiful once completed. Due to the scope of the work we anticipate a time frame of 12 to 18 months.

    Sincerely,

  • Great stay at the Seelbach! Beautiful, historic hotel!

    by melaniegP6066ON on 2018-09-15 04:59 pm

The hotel was beautiful and had a classic charm. The hotel is historic. My room was spacious and quiet. The shuttle service around town was convenient. The hotel is only 10-15 minutes from the airport and conveniently located downtown next to Fourth Street Live and only 10 minutes from the museum. I was very pleased with my stay.

  • Beautiful

by tconduff on 2018-09-10 05:44 am

Beautiful hotel, close to lots of activities downtown and the riverfront park. Heard ghost stories, and the staff is helpful and friendly. Our dinner at the Rathskeller was sub-par, but there are many other nearby choices outside the hotel.

  • Friendly staff and a building full of character

    by Malcolm M on 2018-09-08 05:07 am

The rooms are pretty standard, but the lobby, bar etc. are full of character. A grand piano sits on a Mezzanine floor above the lobby. Was a great venue for a conference - staff very helpful. Takes a while to get your head round the layout, but that is part of the charm. Entrance and exits to some lifts/elevators are a bit small which might make it tricky to use with pushchair, etc.

    Owner Response
    Dear Malcolm M,

Thank you for the review. We are thrilled to hear you enjoyed your time in our property. We are looking at major renovation in the near future and I'm sure the limited size issues will be addressed. We love the charm but want a remodeled version as well. Safe travels and we hope to see you again soon.
