  • Super friendly and accommodating, Great location.

    by Chrisco01 on 2019-11-12 08:49 am

We were there celebrating our 50th Anniversary, and the hotel staff, from the front desk to the bellman, couldn't have been any friendlier.
As soon as we walked in we were greeted warmly by Kinesha at the front desk who wished us a Happy Anniversary.
The room was fine, a lovely king bed, a huge bathroom, sitting area with additional pull-out bedding (which our daughter used one night), and plenty of light from the two big front facing windows.
by the way, there was a plate of chocolate covered strawberries waiting for us in the room, along with a welcome card signed by half a dozen staffers. Much appreciated.
There IS noise from the EL, which runs right below, but we were on an upper floor and honestly, it didn't bother us at all. Nothing at all like street level noise.
By the way, if you come in from Midway, the Washington/Wabash stop on the Orange line literally drops you at the hotel's front door. Exit the train to the left, down the stairs at the end of the platform, and you're there.
Location is awesome, one block away from Millennium Park and the Bean, the Chicago Art Institute, two blocks away from State Street, around the corner from the Palmer House with its amazing lobby. Stop there for an expensive but oh so classy drink.
The Silversmith is also across the street from a GREAT breakfast place, "Goddess and The Baker". Excellent coffee and juice selections, breakfast sandwiches and other offerings, pastries, as well as lunch items.
Even the door man was wonderful. Greg greeted with a genuine smile on his face every day, even suggested a restaurant around the corner for a late night bite and a bowl of their Friday clam chowder.
If you are staying in The Loop, you can pay way more elsewhere, but I doubt you will find a more welcoming staff. The Silversmith is an independent hotel, not a chain, and they really work hard to provide real hospitality.
We are already planning to come back next spring after it warms up to do some more exploring of the great City of Chicago.
The Silversmith will be home base, for sure.
Thank you all for a great stay!

  • Beware of Destination Fee

    by Kayleigh H on 2019-11-09 10:47 am

Please make sure the front desk clarifies and/ or the booking agency the mandatory charge of the Silversmith's destination fee that is charged at the end of your stay. Unfortunately we misunderstood this charge and were under the impression that if we didn't utilize the service we would not be charged. We also failed to see this mandatory fee on the Expedia site when we booked. At check in, there was something mentioned about having ice delivered to the room, coffee, room service, etc. We did not plan on utilizing this service so we did not think much of it until we checked out for the weekend. I called the hotel management for clarification and was told that this charge was for "access to the gym, free business service, and express check-in." All things that are usually included in your hotel stay if these amenities are offered. It was also mentioned that this was their "resort" fee. I have stayed at many "resorts" and let me tell you that there was no resort feel about this stay. It was your typical hotel. So when you're comparing prices of downtown hotels, look into these mandatory fees! Ask about them when you're booking and at check in! And just because this hotel looks like a "great deal" because of price, it may not be that much cheaper when all said and done. There's plenty of hotels that do not charge this mandatory fee or truly have a fee based charge for the services you utilize. Beside this charge, we enjoyed our stay in Chicago at the Silversmith! The room was nice, the bed was comfortable, the bathroom was large, and the staff was welcoming. We will definitely clarify any "additional" and "mandatory" charges whenever booking our next hotel! And we would probably have chosen a different downtown Chicago location if we would have known about this fee. Lesson learned!

  • Excelent hotel!

I stayed at this hotel to be near the starting point of the Chicago Marathon. It was the best decision! The hotel is very clean, the beds very comfortable, the staff very friendly. It is in an excellent area of Chicago. I will surely return to that hotel.

  • Didn't have my reserved room

    by snipe1331 on 2019-10-27 01:30 pm

I had reserved a double bed room for a friend and I to use, however when I arrived we were put in a single bed room. I then showed the front desk my reservation for a double and was told that they didn't have any available doubles even though I had clearly reserved one. I was offered one of two options, to which I chose the first. We could check out a suit that had one bed and a couch that had a fold out bed, or they would move other guests around so that we could have a double.
