  • Hush-puppy Dreams No More

    by Mike S on 2019-05-18 03:35 am

My wife and I after 10 years went back to our beloved Stagecoach Inn where the first thing we thought about was eating baskets of our beloved Hush-puppies. It was the first thing we ordered before even looking at the menu. When they arrived we both looked at each other and said, what are these? Gone, for a new recipe. Really? To management - remodel, new menu, even a younger wait staff we could all accept... but you simply do not mess with Hush-puppy's at the Stagecouch Inn.
Yes, they were not perfect. They were a hard on the ends and a little grainy, soft in the middle, and not too salty. THAT is a Stagecoach Inn HushPuppy. I'm no Gordan Ramsay, but trust me the first thing he would point out is that change is a must to attract new and younger customers, but he would likely rant to the chef you do not mess with certain items like Hushpuppies which is the "essence" and "DNA" of the Stagecoach Inn Restaurant. Grandparents tell stories about eating "basket after basket" of Hushpuppies to their grandchildren. This item needs to be an "all you can eat" menu item. Period. Long time customers won't care what you charge for this menu item either. We long time customers can get over not having older ladies quoting the menus, new nicer looking interiors, a more flexible updated menu - just find a way to bring back our beloved Hushpuppy. Coke messed with history and tried to change the recipe on customers. The outcome financially was a nightmare for them. Unless you are willing to throw away generations of customers find a way to get back that original stack of Hushpuppies in a basket!

  • Texas Comfort Food At Its Best

by ehhartnett on 2019-05-07 12:10 am

My wife and I needed a short weekend break and decided to go to the Stagecoach Inn and stay over and have dinner at their restaurant. Yes in deed, what a pleasant surprise, you'll find with this Gem of a restaurant, and the Hotel, in the National Historical Hotel Registry, is just as charming. My wife and I split an arugula and strawberry salad and she ordered the Beer Can Chicken andI had to go for the Chicken Fried Steak. When in Texas, go all in. Wow, the cream gravy for my chicken fried steak was exceptional and the best I've had, and the chicken fried steak was fantastic with the mashed potatoes and perfectly cooked green beans. My wife's beer can chicken was exceptional as well, great seasoning and moist and tender with the same sides as mine. So we always ask the same question, Would you go back? In a heart beat, worth the drive for this very charming and wonderful experience. We also had a great breakfast the next morning.

I went there for lunch with my wife and brother. The restaurant is not in the Inn. There were not many people there.

  • Mom's birthday

    by 444LauraM on 2019-05-05 11:08 am

We took my mom here for her birthday as a surprise. We used to come here a lot back in the old days. In fact, my parents held my brothers rehearsal dinner here.
First, it looks lovely. They've done a really nice job remodeling it and it's really pretty. The wait staff was great and the service was really good.
My mom was disappointed the hush puppies did not look the same. The server said the machine was broken. They did taste pretty much as a remember. Mom said her turkey was good. I had shrimp and my husband had salmon. Same sides on both which were really creative and had the potential to be excellent. Problem was my grilled romaine had so much salt it wasn't edible. Shame because it could have been delicious.
When i made the reservation, i made a point in telling them it was my mom's birthday. The lady at the table next to ours got a special dessert but mom did not.
Overall, i would say it is good, but does have some room for improvement.

  • This Restaurant is Worth the Drive

Along with regular trips off-shore, my wife and I are day trippers in the Hill Country of Texas. There are dozens - if not more - places you can be at with an hour or so that give you a glimpse of the history and culture of Central Texas. One such place is small community just north of us called Salado. It mean salty in Spanish and its proper pronunciation is Sal-ah-doh. There are no "Long As" in Spanish. This however is Texas and Texans have their own way pronouncing things, so correct diction aside, this community is called Sal?do (notice the macron over the ?, which tells the reader it requires the long ? sound.
There are several places to eat in this small community, but one such place has considerable history to it, The Stagecoach Inn. Before I get too far into this I need to clarify that this review is about the restaurant, not the inn itself. Right on the main drag (416 Main Street) it is well signed and easy to find. The presently restored building was originally rebuilt in in 1943, but later and more recent upgrades give it all of the modern amenities while preserving the look of a much older structure. Step in an you will find a cozy and spacious B&B-like atmosphere that includes a warm fireplace, rocking chairs, barn-beam ceilings, wood floors, and many nice accents that tell you that you are somewhere other than a fast-food.
We arrived early for brunch and were seated immediately, but as our time in the restaurant progressed, customers began arriving and tables began filling up. The single-sided lunch menu (which I personally appreciate its uncomplicated easy-read style) provides traditional Texas fare like Hushpuppies, Snack & Starters, Eggs & Plates which include items like Buttermilk Waffles, Pull Pork Eggs Benedict, Salmon, Salads, and Sandwiches. For starters, we chose the Tea Bread which consisted of 6 miniature muffins with whipped honey butter. We were off to a good start.
For lunch, I opted for the Sandwich Special and found it to be a delightful treat for my taste buds. Generous layers of juicy sliced Prime Rib, served on Texas Toast, accented with a house-made honey mustard dressing, just the right amount of Parsley Salad layered on top of the dressing, tobacco onions and a perfect amount of cheddar cheese. It arrived with an ideal portion of homemade potato chips. My wife ordered a salad of fresh Field Greens and added the rather substantial grilled shrimp.
Dessert was offered, but we declined and chose their very-good freshly made coffee, but the menu consists of very reasonably priced items such as the Strawberry Kiss, Chocolate and Butterscotch Brownie, Peach Cobbler and Chess Pie (check the on-line menu for this one). Also found are a selection of smaller items for only $2.00 called Dessert Bites.
The restaurant has clean, modern and retro-deco ADA Compliant bathroom facilities, easy and spacious parking, is ramp equipped, and also sports a banquet room and kitchen that can handle anything from a large wedding party to a couple just stopping in for lunch. Dietary intolerances can be accommodated - just ask. For those who want something other than coffee, there is a bar inside to slake your thirst. Stop by on your way north or south on Interstate 35. Easy off ramps in either direction will have you pulling into the parking lot in minutes, and then another set of on-ramps will speed along your way. You won't regret it.
