  • Welcoming Diners Once Again

by Wildbluyonder on 2019-03-18 01:24 pm

The Stagecoach Inn in Salado is almost as old as the Republic of Texas. Besides entertaining the likes of Gen. George A. Custer, Charles Goodnight and the greatest of Texans, Sam Houston, for almost 80 years it has also been one of the most famous and beloved restaurants in the Lone Star State. Generations of Old Family Texans have made stopping and dining at the Inn an essential part of their journeys to or from Austin. There, the diners were pampered with the famous hushpuppies, warm from the oven, and a menu that seldom varied from decade to decade, recited from memory by the waitresses who seemed as ancient as the Inn itself. Thus, several years ago, it was heartbreaking to hear that incompetent management had run it into the ground and that the Inn had closed.
Miracles still happen! A group of investors bought both the restaurant and its adjacent motel, spending untold amounts of money landscaping the grounds and restoring both places. Once again, travelers can enjoy dining and staying at the Inn.
Today, the restaurant is both the same, yet different. Expert restoration has preserved much of the original, 19th Century portions of the building while modernizing certain elements, including the bathrooms and lighting. The lobby has been enlarged and the main dining room now sports a magnificent bar. A beautiful wooden floor replaces the worn, red carpet and a cozy seating area around the old, rock fireplace (where the Van Bibbers used to dine) gives the whole dining room a cozy feeling.
However, the Stagecoach Inn restaurant is a work in progress. Service can be spotty, varying from fairly good to forgetting that you are there. Loud noises and conversations in the kitchen frequently spill out into the dining area, spoiling the ambiance. The bartender got confused when I asked him what ingredients went into a cocktail that I ordered. You might be better off sticking to simple pours of whiskey or bourbon instead of asking for a mixed drink.
Instead of being complimentary, the legendary hushpuppies are now an appetizer on the printed (not spoken) menu and a major disappointment. Unlike the garlicky, appetite-inducing originals, these are large, puffy and intended to be dipped in a honey-flavored butter. Also, the Inn makes the same mistake of many roadside caf?s in equating quantity with quality. The "traditional" chicken fried steak that I ordered was so massive that it had to be served in a sort of bowl. It was tasty however, and the tomato aspic was excellent.
These kinks in service and food will eventually be worked out. The important thing is that, along with modernization and restoration, what the new owners of both the restaurant and motel have managed to do is to preserve the timeless quality and beauty of a place that is a fundamental part of Texas history.
I predict that you won't regret stopping here--and that you will be back!

Thank you so much for your kind words! We are definitely still working out all the kinks in the restaurant and the hotel and hope to be a wonderful retreat for a new generation. We hope to see you again soon!

  • Great staff, service and food

Breakfast was wonderful, delicious and reasonably priced. The sun porch was a lovely setting for romantic meals and the fireplace in main area was very quaint and nice especially if it's a little chilly out.

  • An old favorite brought back to life!

    by Eat_Drink_Luv_Travel on 2019-03-15 03:47 pm

The restaurant has been beautifully restored--it retains the history and charm of the original with upgrades that bring it into the 21st century. The central dining room with the lovely fireplace and bar area is really nice. Cozy and welcoming atmosphere.

Amanda the ma?tre d' and Alex the bartender were both fantastic. Alex mixes some great cocktails!

There are essentially two menus: a prix fixe, four-course dinner, or a more extensive a la carte menu. Both have some of the old favorites, including the famous hush puppies and strawberry kiss dessert. The food is solidly good, mostly comfort-food favorites (chicken fried steak, roast chicken, pork chop, shrimp and grits) that will appeal to a wide audience. The main course servings are huge--more than one person can eat. I believe I was served half a chicken, and I couldn't come close to eating it all. Desserts are delicious.

This is a restaurant that is building on a rich history. It may not be exactly what your mom and grandma remember, but it respects the memories of the "old days" while looking ahead to more good times. Go see for yourself--it's definitely worth the drive from Austin or Dallas.

  • Awesome breakfast

We had waffles with a fruit cup. Wait staff was great and the food was really good! Honey butter, excellent coffee and a great view we're included. The waffles were so good we are still wanting them again several days later. Definitely try them!

  • Enjoyed celebrating anniversary weekend.

We stayed 2 nights, in 3 rooms with a party of 6 and had 3 meals, 2 breakfasts and dinner. Beautiful property, prompt & attentive service, and a lovely restaurant experience. We had a great time and fun with so much to walk to in Salado. Thanks for restoring a roadside landmark!
