Original Property Opened: 1621
In 1949, writer Gabriel García Márquez—then a budding journalist—joined a group of archeologists who were then busily exploring the convent’s now-forgotten crypts. During the expedition, the group uncovered a tomb believed to enshrine a nun named Sierva María de Todos los Ángeles, whose copper hair had astonishingly grown after death. Inspired by the discovery, he ultimately wrote his famous novel Of Love and Other Demons based on his time as part of the expedition.

Fun Fact: A graduate of the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, James C. Wright had originally arrived in Panama City at the behest of Panamanian President Belisario Porras in 1911. President Porras had specifically recruited Wright to help establish a sprawling public works program for the whole city.

Fun Fact: The hotel’s unique private museum features memorabilia from the early years. The most precious items include a gold serving platter and matching cloche, used only for VVIPs in times past when this was Xian’s only hotel licensed to accommodate foreign dignitaries.
