A U.S. National Historic Landmark, the legendary Hotel del Coronado was built in 1888. Its visionary founders, Elisha Babcock and H.L. Story, dreamed of creating a seaside resort that would be “the talk of the Western world.” A living legend for well more than a century, The Del celebrates its rich history as a proud host to celebrities, royalty, and beach-loving families through timeless experiences that resonate with modern-day guests. As part of a multi-year preservation project, the original lobby and main entrance were restored using historic photographs and blueprints. In 2022, the resort opened an oceanfront hotel, Shore House at The Del, featuring seaside residences with exclusive amenities.

Discover

  • Gaze upon the Victorian Queen Anne-style architecture of the Hotel del Coronado. Admire the iconic turret, with its signature red roof, of this wooden National Historic Landmark, which is the second largest wooden structure in the country. This iconic beach resort is considered to be one of the most beautiful holiday destinations in the world, living up to the vision of the resort’s founders, Elisha Babcock and H.L. Story.
  • Admire the historic Crown Room of the Hotel del Coronado. Marvel at the monumental 33-foot-tall ceiling, panelled in beautiful Oregon sugar pine that was installed without using any nails, and at the signature crown shaped chandeliers, designed by author L. Frank Baum.
  • Discover the unique historic accommodations of the Hotel del Coronado. Spread across three buildings of the 28-acre resort, stay in the iconic Victorian Building or the contemporary Ocean Towers and California Cabanas. Located in the Victorian Building, unique accommodations are rich in history and feature views of the resort grounds. Enjoy the fresh ocean breeze from the private balcony or patio of the Ocean Towers or California Cabanas, which are located closer to to the beach and pool.

Explore

  • Trek through the San Diego Zoo, the most visited zoo in the United States. The zoo was a pioneer in open-air, cageless exhibits that recreate natural animal habitats, and it is also one of the few zoos in the world that successfully bred the giant panda. See more than 3,500 animals on a guided bus tour of the zoo or from the Skyfari gondola lift overhead.
  • Explore Balboa Park, a 1,200-acre urban cultural park in San Diego that is a National Historic Landmark. Balboa Park hosted the Panama–California Exposition in 1915 and the California Pacific International Exposition in 1935, so be sure to see the historic Exposition buildings. Explore the open space areas, natural vegetation zones, green belts, gardens, and walking paths, as well as the museums, several theaters, and the world famous San Diego Zoo in the park.
  • Wander the historic Gaslamp Quarter, which is the historic heart of San Diego. This historic district features cultural offerings including festivals and other events, theaters, art galleries, symphony halls, concert venues, and museums, in addition to its Victorian architecture. Browse the boutiques, and take in the historic district from a rooftop bar or dining al fresco on the sidewalk.

Experience

  • Learn on The Del’s Legendary Tour. Learn about the iconic resort’s rich heritage, local legends, and the notorious ghost of Kate Morgan during the in-depth, docent-led walking tour. Tour the Victorian building and gardens and enjoy an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the Hotel del Coronado. (Ghost tours are also available!)
  • Bask in the sun on the sparkling private beach of the Hotel del Coronado. This private section of Coronado Beach is the perfect place for a gourment bonfire on the beach, relaxing in a daybed, sand chair, or cabana, a private surfing lesson, or complimentary yoga on the beach.
  • Live the adventure at Torrey Pines, from its nature trails to its namesake beach. Play a round of golf at the Torrey Pines Golf course, the country’s foremost municipal golf course, which is situated atop cliffs towering over the Pacific Ocean. Or go an instructional tandem hanglider flight at Torrey Pines Gliderport, North America’s premier flight school.

Taste

  • Indulge in authetic Southern California cuisine at Hotel del Coronado’s Serẽa. Serẽa offers sustainable, fresh-catch cooking done in a simple, elegant manner for the ultimate sea-to-table experience. The approachable ocean-friendly menu by Chef JoJo Ruiz is robust with fresh seafood, a raw bar, and seasonal ingredients grown by Southern California farmers.
  • Sip a classic cocktail at the historic Babcock & Story Bar of the Hotel del Coronado. Named after The Del's visionary founders, Elisha Babcock and H.L. Story, the original 46-foot handcrafted mahogany bar, which was brought by ship from Philadelphia around Cape Horn in 1888, is the centerpiece of the bar.
  • Savor a distinct dining experience at each of the seven dining establishments of the Hotel del Coronado. Enjoy a craft cocktail out on the Sun Deck and take part in the nightly Sunset Bell Ritual, or enjoy the warm ocean breeze and fresh seafood at the beachfront Sheerwater restaurant. Savor the island’s best fish tacos at The Del’s surf-inspired Beach and Taco Shack, a wood-fired pizza at Eno Pizza, or fresh local seafood from the raw bar of Serẽa.
