The Napa River Inn in Napa, California is housed in a former warehouse and feed store called the Hatt Mill Building. The historic building was named for Hatt family, members of which seem to still visit the structure from time to time.

Captain Albert Hatt built the store in 1886 to serve the local agricultural community and support his growing family. Hatt’s son, Albert Hatt, Jr. married a woman named Margaret in 1889 and later assumed responsibility for the family store. Margaret Hatt tragically died in 1906, leaving Albert, Jr. to care for their five children.

On April 1, 1912, suffering from poor health and the stress of managing home and business, Albert, Jr. tragically took his own life in the warehouse. He was just 46 at the time. In the wake of his son’s death, Captain Hatt sold the facility to the Keig family, who then operated the mill for the next seven decades. The first reported ghost sightings occurred when the hotel opened in 2000.

One guest reported hearing sounds of two figures walking near the guestrooms above Sweetie Pies Bakery, one moving in a swishing dress and the other walking with the heavy footsteps of a man’s gait. The guest then heard the doors to rooms 208 and 207 open and close with force, but saw no figures upon investigating. Other visitors reported seeing visions of a woman a white dress. The spirit, the visitors said, is not distressed but instead seems to be searching for someone. Perhaps Margaret has returned to the building to try to prevent her husband’s untimely death. Perhaps the spirits are Margaret and Albert, Jr., so much in love that they remain reunited in the building together.
