Heralded as America’s first modern hotel, The Statler Hilton opened in January 1956. It boasted a cantilever architectural style that allowed for a decorative glass and porcelain exterior curtain wall in classic Midcentury modern teals and vast open interior spaces. Amongst other countless progressive features, The Statler Hilton was the first building to ever have elevator music and offered separate elevator banks for service and guests. This hotel catered to business while offering entertainment seamlessly. It was the largest convention hotel in the southwestern United States but also had a Grand Ballroom and fine-dining supper club that hosted many famous acts, including Tony Bennet, Liberace, and the Jackson 5.
