Overview

The Palace Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel in San Francisco, was built in 1875 and was the largest and costly hotel in the world. On October 2, 1875, the Palace Hotel officially opened as the city’s first luxury hotel to capture the hearts of the American public.

The Palace Hotel quickly gained prominence among the traveling elite visiting San Francisco. On April 18, 1906 when the devastating San Francisco earthquake hit, the building survived the quake structurally; however, the hotel was decimated in the ensuing fire that swept most of downtown San Francisco. The Palace Hotel re-opened its doors December 15, 1909, completely rebuilt after the devastation of the earthquake. The iconic Palace Hotel has remained the landmark hotel in San Francisco with such timeless creations as The Garden Court's stained glass dome with Austrian crystal chandeliers and the 1909 Maxfield Parrish painting of "The Pied Piper of Hamlin" located in the Pied Piper Bar.

The Palace Hotel is centrally located in downtown San Francisco, just blocks away from Union Square, Chinatown, the Financial District and the Moscone Convention Center. Whether traveling to San Francisco for business or pleasure, guests’ comfort and enjoyment are this hotel’s utmost priority at the Palace Hotel. Guests will experience hospitality on a grand scale in the 556 guestrooms and suites. The hotel boasts soaring 11-foot ceilings, expansive windows, and original architectural details complemented by classically inspired contemporary interiors. The hotel also features luxurious bedding, marble baths, and a host of lavish amenities.

In The Garden Court, the domed ceiling contains more than 72,000 pieces of iridescent glass, one of the largest expanses of colored glass in the world.
