On the island of Crete, above Chania’s Old Venetian Harbor, sits the tranquil accommodations of Domus Blanc. The 19th-century residence was once the home of French Consul Paul Blanc and his wife, Erasmia Ligouni. Blanc built the Neoclassical structure in the distinguished neighborhood of Halepa, where residents like Eleftherios Venizelos, the future Prime Minister of Greece, became his neighbor. Blanc departed in 1901, but the striking home retained his name. Domus Blanc’s later resident, Florentine Kaloutsi, used the space as an artisan workshop to promote the Minoan tradition of weaving. Today, the historic Domus Blanc retains the spirit of industry and hospitality that its original residents brought to the manor. With just six guestrooms and six suites, Domus Blanc provides a sense of place for travelers seeking relaxation in an authentic Grecian setting.

Discover

  • Discover the Neoclassical architecture of Domus Blanc, which once housed the French Consul, Paul Blanc. Like many residents in the Halepa neighborhood of Chania, Blanc had his home built in the Neoclassical style popular in Western Europe. The structure was completed in 1870 and featured wrought-iron balconies, a soft pink façade, and decorative cornices that mirrored the Belle Époque buildings of France.
  • Discover the historical fortifications built around the island of Crete. Travelers can spot the West Venetian Walls in the harbor that were constructed during the island’s era of Venetian rule 1204 to 1669. Or visit the ruins of Kastelli, a hilltop archaeological site featuring the remains of a Byzantine fortress and its accompanying embattlements.
  • Discover centuries-old monasteries and mosques across Crete. Monasteries like the Chrissoskalitissa Monastery and Agia Triada Monastery were built in the Byzantine and Venetian eras. Rough stones and fortresses built into the landscape are markers of the vernacular building in these eras. The later Ottoman-era mosques on Crete, like the Mosque of the Janissaries, were built in the 17th century and feature cut stone, tall spires, and domes.

Explore

  • Explore the Halepa Historic District, of which Domus Blanc is a part. Halepa was an independent town outside the medieval walls of Chania that grew into a distinct neighborhood by the late 1800s. Many international consulates were established there including the French, British, Italian, German, and Austro-Hungarian consulates. Guests can visit the House Museum of Eleftherios Venizelos, a former Greek Prime Minister, in the historic neighborhood.
  • Explore the nearby beaches, which are often ranked among the best in Europe. Stroll on the warm pink coral sands at Elafonissi Beach, dive into the turquoise waters at Gramvousa & Balos Lagoon, or take a panoramic view of the sunset at Falasarna Beach.
  • Explore Loutro, a car-free village accessible only by boat or foot. This seaside town is known for its traditional whitewashed houses and tranquil atmosphere.
  • Explore the Firkas Fortress Archaeological Museum of Chania. Chania sits on one of the most historic, continuously inhabited sites in Europe, with roots tracing back to the ancient Minoan city of Kydonia. Over the centuries, it was subsequently shaped by the Venetians and Ottomans. The Firkas Fortress Archaeological Museum of Chania preserves the wealth of this layered past.

Experience

  • Experience the breathtaking scenery at Crete’s only national park, Lefka Ori (“White Mountains”). Descend into the park via a challenging hike through the Samaria Gorge, where the narrowest point is just nine feet across. Samaria Gorge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the longest gorges in Europe. Or travel by boat to Agia Roumeli and explore the park starting from the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Experience a pleasant 30-minute walk to the nearby Venetian lighthouse, originally built in the 16th century. The Egyptians later modified the historic structure around 1839.
  • Rent a bicycle from the hotel and explore Chania on two wheels. Chania Old Town offers charming streets lined with shops and local cafés. Guests can travel along the coastal road between Halepa, Koum Kapi, and the Old Harbor or cycle along the coast toward nearby Nea Chora Beach.

Taste

  • Experience an exclusive Chef’s Table at Domus Blanc. A table for two is set once a week on the most distinguished balcony in Chania for a personalized menu tailored by the head chef. The meal is paired with wine and cocktails to complement each dish. Guests should contact the hotel to schedule this exceptional dining experience.
  • For everyday Cretan and Greek gastronomy created with locally sourced ingredients, dine at the hotel’s refined Atelier Bistro.
  • Taste exceptional wines and premium olive oil on a tour of the Cretan vineyards. Or walk through Old Town and indulge in Chania’s best street food such as bougatsa and savory koulouri at local eateries. Bougatsa is a flaky pastry made with thin layers of phyllo dough that is most commonly filled with custard. Koulouri is a ring-shaped bread coated with toasted sesame seeds.
  • Join a cooking class arranged by the concierge and spend an evening preparing an authentic, homemade Cretan meal. Attendees will learn about fresh, local ingredients, the secrets of a Mediterranean diet, and how to pair dishes with local wine.
