In Quebec, directly on the Ottawa River, sits the grand cedar structure of the Fairmont Le Château Montebello, a historic resort featuring buildings that date back to 1930. With over 10,000 red cedar logs used in the construction of the three main buildings, this resort contains the largest log cabin in the world. This log structure was originally used as the exclusive retreat of the Seigniory Club, which hosted the likes of Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco. In 1970, this relaxing escape to nature was opened to the public, after which it became one of the most popular luxury resorts in Quebec and Eastern Canada. Guests have an array of destinations to visit during their stay in Quebec and the outdoor adventures that await guests are seemingly endless. Fall and spring welcome activities like squash, tennis, biking, hiking, fishing, and indoor golf. Winter allows for even more recreational activities such as hockey, broomball, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, tobogganing, tube sliding, sleigh rides, ice skating, and dog sledding. Finally, summer is perfect for croquet, canoeing, swimming, volleyball, basketball, badminton, golf, and horseshoes. Surrounding the hotel, guests can explore the Rouge River, Plaisance Falls, Parc Omega, and Kenauk Nature Reserve to experience the natural beauty of the area.

Discover

  • Marvel at the skillful craftsmanship that constructed the Fairmont Le Château Montebello, the world’s largest log cabin. It took some 10,000 red-cedar logs to raise this historic treasure.
  • Discover the massive, 6-sided fireplace upon entering inside the Fairmont Le Château Montebello. Standing 65 feet tall and weighing an impressive 55 tons, this giant fits perfectly into the hotel’s arena-like lobby.
  • Admire the extensive collection of paintings by Scottish artist Adam Sherriff that adorn the walls of the hotel. These masterpieces are all originals, and depict scenes of Canadian history and heritage.

Explore

  • Explore the Manior Papineau National Historic Site just moments away on the grounds of the Fairmont Le Château Montebello. This location was once the grand estate of Louis-Joseph Papineau, a 19th-century reformist and patriot.
  • Visit one of North America’s largest private game & fish reserves, Kenauk Nature. The 100 sq mile protected domain was originally organized by the King of France in 1674. Today, the reserve is internationally known for its luxurious log cabins and numerous outdoor activities.
  • Travel to the most impressive natural falls in the area at Plaisance Heritage and Falls. This recreational tourist site has a history center that recalls the past glory of the industrial village (North Nation Mills) that once occupied the location.

Experience

  • Experience the sights at nearby Parc Omega, a wildlife reserve located just minutes away. Observe the unique plants and animals that inhabit the 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) that constitute the size of the park.
  • Learn about the intricate manufacturing processes that go into producing the artisanal chocolates of the ChocoMotive company. Attend an open workshop and see the methodology first-hand.
  • Play a round of golf at one of Québec’s foremost public golf courses, the Golf Fairmont Le Château Montebello. Originally designed by Stanley Thompson in 1929, the fairway is revered today for its environmental quality and beautiful landscape.

Taste

  • Relish the delicious seasonal menu served at Aux Chantignoles, winner of OpenTable’s 2019 Diner’s Choice Award. Each recipe features simplicity and freshness, which together capture the flavor of the region. Sunday Brunch is the greatest culinary tradition at Aux Chantignoles, which is known all over Québec for its delectable gourmet breakfast dishes.
  • Taste the rich artisanal cheeses that has made Fromagerie Montebello famous throughout Canada. The names of Fromagerie Montebello’s signature cheeses reflect the storied history of the area, such as Tête à Papineau, Rèbellion 1837, Manchebello, and Adoray.
  • Enjoy a freshly-brewed craft beer at Brasseurs Montebello. Promoting the heritage of the surrounding Outaouais region, the pub offers a warm atmosphere where small groups can relax together in peace.
