Gran Real Yucatan boasts a wonderful history that harkens back to the 19th century. The first owners of the building used the location to grow henequen, which they transported to Europe for export. In return, they managed to acquire many lavish items with which to decorate the home. The structure still features many of its original fixtures from that era, including its support columns, flooring and window fixtures. Gran Real Yucatan represents Spanish Colonial-style architecture amid its modern upkeep, with a bounty of fresh, floral accents that welcome guests to this day.

Gran Real Yucatán was originally built as a substantial estate and henequen property during the 19th century. The structure retains many original architectural features, including its columns, floors, doors, and windows. The property functioned as part of Yucatán's prosperous henequen economy, which transformed Mérida into one of Mexico's wealthiest cities during the Porfirian period.

The residence evolved into an elegant mansion reflecting the architectural tastes of Mérida's elite. Sources describe it as a former 19th-century French-style mansion with Colonial Revival influences

The property survived while maintaining many original historic elements, preserving its connection to Mérida's henequen era heritage.

The historic estate was restored and adapted into a luxury hotel while retaining its original architecture and historic character. The former estate began operations as the Gran Real Yucatán hotel in Mérida's historic center.
