Overview

Inspired by civic pride, the City of Salem established the Hawthorne Hotel to serve as a community focal point. The classic brick structure stands adjacent to Salem Common and has figured prominently in the area’s community and social life since 1925. It draws its name from the acclaimed 19th century American Novelist, Nathaniel Hawthorne, who grew up in Salem.

Within the Federal style architecture and Palladian windows, the 93-room Hawthorne Hotel has flat-screen televisions, complimentary WiFi, and triple-sheeted bedding. The hotel features a fitness room, as well as access to the local YMCA, which has a gym and two pools. When in need of refreshments, guests can enjoy coffee and tea in the morning, or cider and lemonade in the afternoon in the lobby. For dinner, guests can patronize the Tavern on the Green, which offers traditional pub fare, and a full bar in a cozy atmosphere with a wood burning fireplace, or enjoy Sunday Jazz Brunch in the relaxing atmosphere at Nathaniel’s. The Hawthorne Hotel also features six rooms for holding meetings, receptions, weddings, or banquets, from the spacious elegance of the Grand Ballroom to the maritime feel of the Library.

Situated on Salem’s Heritage Trail, the Hawthorne Hotel is surrounded by the many and varied attractions that have contributed to the city’s important legacy as a maritime, literary, and historic destination. From the lovingly preserved House of the Seven Gables, which was built in 1667 and served as the setting and inspiration for Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel of the same name, to the Old Burying Point, where the judge of the Salem Witch Trials is buried, guests will find themselves well situated to experience all that the North Shore has to offer.

Hawthorne Hotel, a member of Historic Hotels of America since 1991, dates back to 1925.

Fun Fact On top of the roof of the hotel is "The Cabin," a private clubhouse open only to members of the Salem Marine Society, an organization founded in 1766 by sea captains.
