  • Reasonably comfortable for a heritage hotel

    WE recognize this is a Heritage building over 100 yrs old however some of the basics need more attention. For example, the lights should have all been working properly. The bathtub/shower drain was quite slow. The kingsize bed mattress did not provide good support to me (who has a bad back).

    We saw 2 people unconscious from drug overdose, 2 drug deals, and about 10 people shooting up. All of it happened between us leaving the hotel and crossing the street to get breakfast.
    The hotel smelled old, like very old and not updated...

  • Good to stay

    We stayed there for four nights. I experienced this kind of historic type architecture hotel like vast marbled floor, big chandeliers and huge carpeted area for the first time in America. This was our first visit in San Francisco. The centrally located hotel is on the Market street and very close to the 'union square' which is the main shopping area of San Francisco. The rooms are big but very poorly lit. It could have better illuminated. I liked the cleanliness of the bed linens and room services.
    But the homeless and drug addict peoples in the surrounding area is very much disturbing.

    From the outside it looks amazing! The chandeliers are gorgeous and the old marble flooring amazing. The best thing are these and Sams diner across the road. We swapped rooms as the room on level 4 had a roof that was falling in and the cleaners came in at 5pm - our "upgrade" to the 7th floor was smaller had electrical issues, leaking tap, smaller bathroom, mouldy curtains, no main light that worked a really noisy air con, a hole in the wall, mouldy soap, and a tv that was moody! The desk staff were nice and the guest manager lovely and they were apologetic and helped reimburse resort fees, however the bell boys through the week were unhelpful and didn't know the area or what was happening.

  • Mildew and damp carpets in dire need of repair

    The room was large but stunk of mildew and the carpets were damp and felt unsanitary to walk on barefoot. There were also loud noises from upstairs at about 5-6 am. Location is fairly convenient for Bart or walking distance to other neighborhoods like Hayes Valley. I was unhappy to see I was stuck with a resort fee upon checking out even though my work had prepaid for the room, seems irrational that this charge could not have been pre-charged as well so that my employer could cover it and not surprise me with additional billing as I'm checking out.
    There is no minibar in the room or breakfast/food service in the hotel but there is a Starbucks in the lobby if needed.
