  • Itâs all about expectations

    by Keith S on 2018-09-23 02:09 am

After reading all of the extremely mixed reviews about this hotel our three night stay at the Whitcomb was not something we had high hopes or expectations for. Dropping off the car at the valet ( dank alley behind the hotel ) wasn't a great first impression but the experience improved quickly.
    1) the valet was friendly and accommodating,
    2) the walk into this OLD hotel showed the past glory of the the public spaces.
    3) the reception team were friendly and honest "take care on the streets, but don't be afraid"
    4) our family room was spacious for a city hotel, rear corner room with three windows.
    5) it was clean, and while it had the typical old hotel "aroma" it certainly wasn't the "stench" that some have described.
    6) yes there's a lot of homeless people in the immediate area, BUT, we didn't see more here than any of the adjacent streets. This is definitely a San Francisco problem not a Whitcomb problem. My honest answer to complaints on this point is "if you want to pretend there's no issue in SF with homelessness then pay more and stay in a bubble elsewhere.
7)as many have said there is a super breakfast lunch and dinner place directly opposite, Sams. highly recommended.

Summary : on our vacation we stopped in more basic places and paid more, all were clean ( enough ) some were very tired, The Whitcomb is middle of the road.

I've given a four, is I think it's good value and decent, accessible location for seeing SF. It has its down points, but price quality it's about right. If you are expecting Marriott, Westin, Hyatt "gloss" you will be disappointed. If you are easily frightened by real street life, you are going to be uncomfortable in this area AND also much of downtown SF

Contrary to what many posts mention we saw no signs of open drug use around the Whitcomb in our three day stay BUT sadly we saw the consequence of regular substance abuse constantly and everywhere in this beautiful city.

  • BEST HOTEL IN SAN FRANCISCO

    by Dana B on 2018-09-20 06:40 pm

My husband and I stayed 7 nights at Hotel Whitcomb. I have absolutely NO complaints and I am very fussy. Our hotel room was a large, clean, nicely furnished with a comfortable king size bed, roomy bathroom with a combo bathtub / shower, flat screen TV, personal safe, AC / heat, Internet, and 3 awesome windows! We found everyone that we came in contact with, maintenance, maids, front desk, security, bellmen, and restaurant personnel, polite and friendly. I had the pleasure to meet Asal Mirab/Guest Service Manager, whom is a definite asset to Hotel Whitcomb with her beautiful smile, warm personality and helpful disposition. I was able to sleep peacefully knowing I was in a safe, secure hotel. The Hotel is a historical site and beautiful. I was concerned about prior reviews about the homeless. I can honestly tell you they are NOT a problem near Hotel Whitcomb. Security and bellmen are constantly checking the exterior. I personally heard a bellmen tell a guy not to smoke by the entrance. You cannot find a better location in san Francisco!
We had breakfast at the hotel and it was delicious! Another good choice is Sam's Diner, directly across the street from Hotel Whitcomb. Burger King and Chase Bank are at the corner. The Orpheum Theatre and Walgreens are each half a block away. Trinity Place, 500 apartments, is being built across the street. Magnificent City Hall is nearby. The F Trolley and bus stops are directly outside. Take BART from the airport, exit Civic Center and walk half a block to Hotel Whitcomb.

  • Underwhelmed

    by Nan24a on 2018-09-20 05:40 pm

Upon arrival and saying to the older guy behind the counter "Hi, we are here to check in", I no sooner got the words out and he snapped "credit card and I.D"!! he says $300 has been taken from your account as a bond". I said don't you just hold it? He said "no". I said "upon check out do we get it back immediately." He said 3-5 days and turned the other way. I then checked my bank account online and yes it had been taken. I'll be keeping an eye out for the funds they say will be given back.

We then went up to our room (nobody showed us to the room). Room was ok but lighting was bad. Bathroom was so small only 1 could fit in it at a time.

Breakfast in their restaurant was plentiful and delicious. The waiter was none to friendly. In fact he looked board and was gruff.

The amount of homeless people doing drugs outside was unnerving and making me look behind myself as I went through a group of them. The smell of urine was very strong outside the hotel from, I gather, the homeless population.

The staff at check in seemed uninterested and made us feel like we were a hindrance.

One positive note was Kristy behind the bar - she was delightful and made us feel like we were important. She could take a joke as well. She deserves a pay rise as she, out of ALL the staff, made us feel welcome.

It's a shame for your hotel that your staff (apart from Kristy) seem uninterested and that is a major reason we wouldn't stay again AND the drug issue that is going on outside your doors. It was clearly a drug dealing area because we would have seen at least 6 drug deals going down .... they are def not hard to spot. The smell of marijuana was strong all the way down the street. it was clear this is not an area for children nor adults for that matter.

My advice to anyone who is looking at this hotel to stay .... don't !

  • Hotel was fine, manager was not

by ShayFamily on 2018-09-19 10:53 am

The interior lobby and hallways of the hotel are large... but, much like downtown San Francisco, rooms are tiny. I expect that from downtown SF hotel so that wasn't disappointing.

What WAS disappointing was how I was treated by a front desk manger, Barney. When checking out and leaving my key at the front desk, waiting for his attention... Barney pointed to "next window" sign and without making eye contact... said. "I'm not working" and walked away. I used to work at many prestigous hotels in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills (in college) as well as small budget hotels (in high school) and never in my career did I disrespect a guest that way. I won't got back to that hotel just because of him.

The rest of the hotel was fine (minus the drug deal and homeless people right outside the back entrance of the hotel, which didn't bother me as much as Barney did).
