Located in the heart of Surrey, the origins of the Oatlands Park Hotel hail back to a luxurious palace that King Henry VIII built during the late 1530s. The king desired a special haven that his fourth wife, Anne of Cleves, could use at her leisure. Most of the structure was restored in the late-17th century though, following the aftermath of the English Civil War. The Oatlands Park Hotel did not become an actual holiday destination until 1856, when James Watts Peppercorne began operating the location as the South Western Hotel. Many famous international celebrities quickly began staying at the site, including Émile Zola, Fanny Kemble, and Edward Lear. Heritage England even listed the entire estate as a Grade II-listed building. Since the 1980s, this terrific country retreat has continued to operate as the Oatlands Park Hotel to much acclaim.
