Pioneer Inn

History
1901: The ten-room Pioneer Hotel, as it was originally called, opened in December 1901 as a first class hotel for travelers to West Maui. It was built by George Alan Freeland, whose descendants still live in Maui.
1960: The plantation-era movie theater located behind the hotel, with a dirt floor and an organ played by one of the Freeland children, was removed to make way for a new wing. This added 30 more rooms to the original building and the name was changed to the Pioneer Inn.
1982: Howard Lennon from Dallas, Texas, acquired the lease and the property underwent major renovations. The Lennon family still operates the property today.
1997: The hotel rooms were modernized and the Lennon family became affiliated with the Best Western hotel chain.
2001: The Pioneer Inn celebrated its Centennial with a grand party that included a salute from the Lahaina small boat fleet, an original chant performed by Kumu Hula Roselle Bailey, and 5,000 orchids dropped by helicopter over the harbor and inn.
Pioneer Inn, a member of Historic Hotels of America since 2016, dates back to 1901.
