  • A fine hotel in a beautiful historic building

    by David B on 2018-09-16 02:39 pm

Our expectations were high because of the building's character and quality restoration. The hotel itself is fine but lacks the distinctiveness that one expects from the building. The rooms are quality "ho hum." Also, they have inadequate lighting other than the uncomfortable "daylight bright" recessed lights.

  • Nice Stay in Portland

    by Randy G on 2018-09-16 02:39 pm

Hotel is in a great location in Portland, easy walking distance to the old port and restaurants. We enjoyed our stay.

Hotel has good bones as it is based in the old armory. Nice room with high ceiling, comfortable bed/pillows, and very clean. It is quiet at night. Beautiful courtyard and roundabout in front. Valet was very quick to get the car.

The hotel could use some love/investment at some point. Found the rooms to be dark. With the wallpapers/colors on the wall, could definitely use a lighter color on the floor.

The map room is very interesting, just seems like you could make some changes and make it into a more interesting/usable space. Hot tub located in the ground level near the spa seemed cramped and unwelcoming.

Coffee/tea in the morning is made available in the map room. The cups provided were tiny which was a little frustrating. I went back for a second cup and the coffee was out.

The armory bar is a nice place for a cocktail.

Overall it feels like a 3.5 hotel that needs a little work but rounded it up to 4 given the good location.

  • Great room, fine location, helpful staff

    by lordrob44 on 2018-09-16 08:15 am

My wife and I stayed just one night, on our way to Maine's lake district. The hotel occupies the restored Portland Armory and has a very nice lobby feel of a small hotel. We were given a room upgrade for a totally unknown reason, but the upgrade room was very nice indeed. Lots of bedroom space, a couch at the foot of the bed to watch the latest news of Hurricane Florence, and a good location up a walkway ramp and at the beginning of the second floor. Valet parking is a must, but the drivers are very quick with the retrieval. Additionally, it was raining when we had intended to walk to dinner, and the hotel offered us a free limousine ride to the restaurant...and they picked us up after the meal, when it was still raining. Very nice service! We will definitely stay here again.

We really enjoyed the Portland Regency. I was a bit concerned because the reviews were mixed, but I couldn't have been more pleased with the choice. The historic essence of the building with its cobblestone garden area in front was super charming. The decor inside, although a bit tired, only added to the quaint nature of this lovely place. Our room was plenty spacious for 2, and had a huge updated bathroom. We ate at both the restaurant and lounge. Both were fine, but the burgers and amazing homemade creamsicle cheesecake at the Armory lounge were outstanding. Kudos to the pastry chef! The spa was very nice and the staff was quite friendly. The best part of our stay, however, was the extremely friendly and helpful crew at the front desk. They answered a multitude of questions, ran back and forth to our car to retrieve items and even provided transportation. The one person that stands out the most was Rowan. He saved us so much stress by providing transportation to a few locations that were a bit out of our walking distance. It was completely unexpected, and extremely appreciated! The experience was more like staying at the home of a good friend rather than a stuffy hotel. We would definitely return.

  • Cool courtyard

    by Anna4travel on 2018-09-02 08:42 pm

Remodeling a old beauty has its problems but how hard is it to put a ice machine on each floor? So request the 3rd floor if you want a cold drink that's where the only ice machine is. No mini frig or in room safe. The 1st floor is really the bsmt so there is a ramp or steps then a elevator to get there.
The positive is the location, your walking distance to wharf bars & restaurants. The parking lot is behind their courtyard restaurant/bar. The checkout is noon which is nice and will let you leave your car in lot after checkout time if you still have some sightseeing to do.
