I love this hotel. It is chock full of things that modern hotels lack, like beautiful, commodius public rooms, a wonderful front porch with rocking chairs, antiques, old clocks, a grand piano and oil paintings. I spent several hours in the library, which is the kind of library I would have in my house if I could, and enjoyed walking around the spacious grounds in front of the hotel. Big, deep chairs and sofas are scattered around the hotel ready to be dropped into, and chandeliers light the hallways and parlours. There are also amenities like the large heated salt water swimming poll, the more modern exercise room and even a cute little 9 hole miniature golf course which winds around the artificial waterfalls in the back of the hotel. The restaurant was a pleasant surprise as one would expect a restaurant at a hotel like this to be a formal kind of place, but the Sisters Restaurant was not. The food was flat out excellent, though not pricey or what we would call highfalutin. The breakfast was included but was served off a menu and was nicely prepared. The dining room is in the first floor of the hotel and was a little dark, which worked fine for the attached bar, but I had trouble reading the menu. The bed room was spacious, but like most old hotels, had a small but modern bathroom. Staying here will run you 30% (I am guessing on that, but I bet I am not off much) more than the generic hotel out near the interstate, but it is money well spent. Additionally, Abindgon is a quaint old town full of old buildings and churches what are worth a look, and of course the Barter Theatre (so named because it was founded during the depression and would take produce in exchange for tickets) is across the street from the Martha, so plan on taking in a show when you visit.

  • A Nice Surprise

Friends had told us about the town as a half way stop between Penn. and Georgia.
and it is a delightful little town with an excellent playhouse, great restaurants, and some historical sites.. the Martha, as they call it, was much better then I expected. as I was expecting old, cold and damp because of it's age. plus it was December. But it was warm, cozy, clean , and well taken care of. the staff was as good and knowledgeable as you hope to find. Will stay there again... and of course, theatre was across the street.
    walk to everything...

  • Great Stay-We felt spoiled

From the moment we drove up to The Martha, everyone we met was courteous and helpful. Our room was in the main building and being antique lovers, we enjoyed all the special detail to furniture and paintings. The bed and pillows were comfortable. We were on the 3rd floor, so it took a little while for the hot water to arrive, but once it did it was hot. The bathroom had been brought up to date and was very nice and the bathrobes a nice touch that just added to the overall experience of feeling very spoiled. The inn is very clean, decorated very nicely, and the included breakfast delicious and we enjoyed being served. Will we be back? You bet we will!

The Martha never disappoints. Great room, great service, great bar, great dinner and terrific location, especially is one is going to a play at the Barter Theater. This is a great place for special occasions as there is a pool and a beautiful spa available to guest. If you are in Southwest Virginia this is a must.

For the second year in a row, our organization held a banquet there. As was the case last year, the valet out front was rude and quite uncooperative--- to the point where one of the people trying to help us set up just left out of frustration (kudos to Branson who later took over for the earlier valet... Branson was courteous, polite and went out of his way to be helpful. We REALLY appreciated him!). When one of our members asked to see the manager, it never happened. S/he never gave her the courtesy of even showing up, much less of speaking to her. The food was, again, nothing to write home about. Vegetarian pasta was cold. Chicken skin was rubbery (my opinion & another's as well)-- the woman sitting next to me took one bite of it then left the rest. A bright spot in the evening: the waiters and waitresses were very commendable. Their service and attentiveness was greatly appreciated by us all and we thank them. Going to Abingdon to eat? I would seriously think twice about spending money here....
