History

Discover Vertshuset Røros, which was originally established as a shop operated by John Natanael Ramm.

Vertshuset Røros was constructed during the historic reign of the United Kingdom’s famed Queen Victoria, who sat on the British throne from 1837 to 1901.

Located at Rammgården in Kjerkgata, Vertshuset Røros is an authentic testament of Norway's enduring heritage. history Rammgården itself dates back to the 1600s, when Røros Copperworks were first established. The local copper industry continued to flourish for many centuries thereafter, which inspired many businesspeople to invest in Kjerkgata. In 1844, Johan Natanael Ramm purchased a small building in Kjerkgata, which eventually became the Vertshuset Røros. Ramm quickly established his own shop on the ground floor, as well as a small pen for livestock in the backyard. The shop continued to operate until 1967, when it expanded to include a restaurant, a bar, and several meeting rooms. In 1988, Rammgården was combined with the adjacent textile factory and was converted into Røros Turisthotell. This establishment then became the luxury hotel known as Vertshuset Røros.

Hotel Timeline

Rammgården, the historic property where Vertshuset Røros is located, dates back to the 1600s and is tied to the early history of Røros Copperworks.

During the height of Røros Copper Works, Rammgården was taken over by Peder Hiort the Elder from Northern Germany. His son, Peder Hiort the Younger, later became an important figure in Røros history.

Johan Natanael Ramm purchased a small building in Kjerkgata that later became part of Vertshuset Røros. He established a shop on the ground floor and kept livestock in a small backyard pen.

The adjacent Brødrene Krogs Uldvarefabrik, or wool/textile factory, began as part of Røros’s industrial development.

Brødrene Krogs Uldvarefabrik operated as an important industrial workplace in Røros, employing up to 60 workers, many of them women, working in shifts.

The Rammgården shop expanded into hospitality use when the main building was taken into use as a restaurant and bar. The site also expanded to include meeting rooms.

Rammgården was combined with the adjacent textile factory and converted into Røros Turisthotell.

The establishment later became the historic hotel known as Vertshuset Røros

Vertshuset Røros has been renovated in traditional Røros style in consultation with the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage.

Vertshuset Røros was inducted into Historic Hotels Worldwide. Historic Hotels Worldwide is a prestigious collection of historic treasures, including more than 300 legendary historic hotels including many former castles, chateaus, palaces, academies, haciendas, villas, monasteries, and other historic lodging spanning ten centuries.
