Wyndham Merida was constructed in the years leading up to World War I, which was an era defined by its economic prosperity, artistic expression, and political intrigue. The roots of Wyndham Merida date back to 1912, when it was first constructed in the glorious style of Spanish Colonial architecture. Originally built as a residence, the structure was sought after for its charming aesthetics. At its advent, the building was located on the most prominent avenue of Merida, which allowed the structure to flourish greatly over the years. The residence was gradually converted into a hotel, further known as Wyndham Merida. Today, the hotel continues to welcome visitors who prize a historically authentic experience.

Hotel Timeline

The property was built as a private residence on one of Mérida’s most prominent avenues. The original residence featured Spanish Colonial architecture. Its surviving design now reflects a blend of Spanish Colonial and Colonial Revival influences.

The building began its history as a domestic property rather than a purpose-built hotel. Sources describe it as a historic casona, or mansion. The private residence was gradually adapted for hotel use. Before becoming Wyndham Mérida, the property underwent a substantial restoration. Original wood and stone were retained and carefully worked by Yucatecan artisans, preserving the mansion’s regional architectural identity while accommodating full-service hotel operations.

The newly renovated hotel, Wyndham Mérida was inducted into Historic Hotels Worldwide. Historic Hotels Worldwide is a prestigious collection of historic treasures, including more than 300 legendary historic hotels including many former castles, chateaus, palaces, academies, haciendas, villas, monasteries, and other historic lodging spanning ten centuries.
