Founded in 1870 and one of the most historic coeductional universities in the U.S., Syracuse encompasses an array of architectural styles from 19th-century Romanesque Revival to contemporary and is home to a half-dozen art galleries and a permanent art collection of some 45,000 pieces.

• Travel to the nearby Thornden Park, an inviting 76-acre space whose Mills Rose Garden features more than 350 varieties of roses around a central gazebo and a peaceful oasis at the Lily Pond. The park was listed on the U.S. Register of National Historic Places in 1994.

• Explore Syracuse history in nearby Armory, Clinton, and Hanover Squares. Armory Square is a hub of well-preserved historical buildings of different architectural styles.
