With its unique architecture and cultural diversity, the InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile was destined to be a success. Built in 1929 as the Medinah Athletic Club, the club was later forced to close in 1934 due to the stock market crash. InterContinental Hotels bought the property in 1988, and after a quarter of a billion dollars in original restoration work and 12 years later, this truly magnificent InterContinental Chicago hotel was reintroduced to Chicago as a harmonious merging of Old World elegance and 21st-century craftsmanship. The InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile stands proudly as one of the city’s landmark architectural treasures.
Discover
- Discover the 42-story tall InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile, which was one of the first skyscrapers in the country. This historic hotel has become one of the most beautiful and iconic landmark hotels after it was converted from the luxurious Medinah Athletic Club for Shriners. Gaze at the three large relief carvings in the Indiana limestone façade of the eighth floor that depict Wisdom, Consecration, and Contribution in ancient Assyrian style.
- Discover the exotic gold dome that crowns the top of the InterContinental Chicago, which was originally designed as part of a decorative docking port for blimps but was never used.
- Discover the gold leafing, chandeliers, and murals that adorn the Grand Ballroom of the InterContinental Chicago, which was restored by Lido Lippi, who was consulted in the restoration of the Sistine Chapel.
Explore
- Explore Michigan Avenue and the Magnificent Mile, and gaze at the landmark historic buildings.
- Explore Millennium Park and see Cloud Gate, one of the world’s largest permanent outdoor art installations, as well as take advantage of the recreation and cultural opportunities that the park offers.
- Explore Grant Park and see Buckingham Fountain, one of the largest fountains in the world that is modeled after the Latona Fountain at Versailles. The fountain represents Lake Michigan, and the four sets of sea horses represent the four states that border this Great Lake.
Experience
- Experience a sightseeing tour or dinner cruise along the Chicago River that departs from the Navy Pier, an iconic city landmark, or take a ride on its nearly 200-foot-high Ferris wheel and enjoy unparalleled views of Chicago.
- Experience all that Chicago’s Theatre District has to offer, and enjoy a concert of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
- Climb to the top of Willis Tower, the second-tallest building in the United States and the Western Hemisphere, and enjoy the view of four states from the Skydeck, which is the highest observation deck in the United States.
