• Venture out in Old Town Key West and wander along Duval Street stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. Home to landmark historic buildings with unique gingerbread trim and pastel shades, fabulous restaurants, legendary bars and music venues, the street is lined with art galleries, museums, great shopping, and popular attractions.
• Explore The Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum. This is the historic home of American writer Ernest Hemingway, where he wrote and lived for more than 10 years. The home was built in 1851 in the heart of Old Town Key West. Tour the rooms and wander the beautiful grounds and imagine the prolific period of this Nobel Prize winner’s career. Keep an eye out for multiple six-toed cats prowling the property and believed to all be descendants of Hemingway’s cat, Snow White.
• Take a short walk to The Basilica of St. Mary Star of the Sea to gaze upon Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto. In 1922, Sister Louis Gabriel and her fellow nuns created the grotto. On the day that the shrine was dedicated, Sister Gabriel blessed the grotto and said that as long as the grotto stood, “Key West would never experience the full brunt of a hurricane.” When hurricanes threaten, Key West residents head to the grotto to pray and light candles.
