Old Faithful Inn, a rustic-style lodge with a log and wood shingle exterior, is adjacent to the world-famous Old Faithful Geyser. The original part of the Inn, known as the “Old House,” was completed in 1904 and is an icon of National Park Rustic architecture. This fantastic destination is also one of just a few hotels in the country to bear a listing as a National Historic Landmark. The immense lobby rises 76 feet and features a massive stone fireplace and a handcrafted clock made of copper, wood, and wrought iron. It is the most requested lodging facility in Yellowstone National Park, and guest accommodations include rooms with private and shared baths. Additionally, a full-service restaurant, deli, gift store, and interpretive tours are available. (The Inn is open early May through mid-October.)
Discover
- Discover the large red doors that lead into a 76-foot-tall lobby and admire the National Park Service Rustic architecture inside. The Inn is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and is also a U.S. National Historic Landmark.
- Get the first glimpse of Old Faithful as it erupts for the day by walking just steps outside of the inn. Afterward, head inside and take the free tour that is offered several times each day to learn about the architectural design and long history of this inn that was built in 1904.
- Marvel at the gnarled wooden branches and beams throughout the interior that make this iconic lodge seem like it grew out of the soil. The structure is the largest log hotel in the world and was the first of the park lodges of the American West.
Explore
- Explore a series of paths and walkways that wind around the Old Faithful Inn. The Inn is located in the Upper Geyser Basin which has the largest concentration of geysers in the world. The Firehole River flows through the geyser basin and is also within walking distance.
- Venture out to the Upper and Lower Falls, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. The canyon is approximately 20 miles long and more than 1,000 feet deep. Feel the power of the water rushing over the falls as it plummets 109 feet from the Upper Falls and 309 feet from the Lower Falls.
- Soak in the brightly colored Grand Prismatic Spring in the Midway Geyser Basin, the largest hot spring in the United States. It is one of the more than 10,000 thermal features in the park. Throughout the park find geysers, mudpots, and steam vents for viewing.
Experience
- Saddle up and see the park from horseback to get a different view by way of the backcountry. There are half-day rides or full-day rides and different tours to choose from. Or set out on a two-legged tour and hike one of the many trails scattered all over the area. Grab a map when entering the park and start exploring.
- Step foot on a boat and view the 140 miles of shoreline from the water on a scenic tour. Learn the history of the area and keep an eye out for eagles, ospreys, and perhaps an elk or bison on the shore. Fish for native Cutthroat Trout and non-native Lake Trout on a fishing/charter boat or rent a boat and set the course. Sunset kayak tours are also available.
- Experience a wildlife tour, several are offered and the scenery and animals encountered are numerous. In Lamar or Hayden Valley it is possible to see wolves, coyotes, bison, elk, bears, and pronghorn. In other areas bighorn sheep, mountain goats, and hawks may be spotted.
Taste
- Taste a mixed drink and a bite at the Bear Pit Lounge near the Old Faithful Inn Dining Room. Serving a light menu and cocktails, it dates back to the early days of the inn, and features etched-glass replicas of the original wooden Bear Pit Murals.
- Head out of the park and into West Yellowstone for an authentic BBQ meal at Firehole Bar-B-Que Company. Choose from items like the pulled pork sandwich, brisket plate with beans and coleslaw, sausage, or ribs. Get there early because they cook for the day and may run out of some of the more popular items.
- Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the great outdoors while munching on a sandwich. Yellowstone Park has multiple delis where visitors can grab a sandwich or other snack and get back on the road so as not to miss a minute of the beauty that is in every inch of the park.
