Phantom Ranch in Grand Canyon is tucked beside Bright Angel Creek on the north side of the Colorado River and is the only lodging facility below the canyon rim. The Fred Harvey Company became the concessioner for the camp in 1922 and hired the American architect Mary E.J. Colter to design permanent lodging. Open year-round, it is only accessible by mule, by foot, or by rafting the Colorado River. The accommodations at Phantom Ranch consist of dormitory spaces and cabins. The Phantom Ranch Canteen provides hearty breakfasts, sack lunches, and dinners. Advance reservations are required.

  • Discover the National Park Service Rustic-style architecture that defines the Phantom Ranch. The Grand Canyon Transportation Company originally built this rustic destination at the beginning of the 20th century.
  • Discover Phantom Ranch's dormitory spaces and cabins, which is the only lodging facility located below the Grand Canyon rim. These lodgings have been painstakingly constructed from native stone, rough-hewn wood, and large-scale design elements carried by mule and laborers to the bottom of the canyon.

Special Occasions

Meetings & Groups

For overnight stays at Phantom Ranch, a minimum of 10 to a maximum of 20 hikers, or parties of 10 mule riders, is designated a Group. All Groups are booked with one 10-person cabin. Hiker groups of more than 10 will have the remainder of space divided between male and female dormitory spaces (not in cabins). Group space opens to requests on the first of each month for the entire month of the following year (i.e. Group space for March 1-31, 2013 may be requested beginning on March 1, 2012, etc.) via faxed written request only. The only exception to this rule is January, which will be accepted on January 2nd. Requests must be faxed to 928.638.0982 at midnight (Arizona time, we do not observe daylight savings).
