Las Vegas, just one hour north of Santa Fe, was the largest and richest city in New Mexico in the late 1800s. Today, visitors feel as if they have walked onto a movie set as they stroll past the town’s numerous historic buildings. The Plaza Hotel is a Victorian masterpiece with its intricate three-story brick façade, nine-foot-tall windows, ornate pediments, and elaborate Baroque cornice. In 2006, the hotel expanded to include the neighboring 1891 ‘Grand Emporium’—the finest Italianate building in New Mexico and once a fabulous department store. With 70 guestrooms, many featuring wonderful views of Plaza Park, and the finest dining in northern New Mexico, it is easy to see why the hotel is called “The Belle of the Southwest.”
