Named by local residents who chose the moniker in a newspaper contest, The Cavalier Hotel opened its gracious doors in 1927. The elegant Neoclassical hilltop structure, which overlooks beautiful Atlantic Ocean, catered to well-to-do clientele, who arrived by Pullman car to The Cavalier’s own rail stop. During World War II, the U.S. Navy used the hotel as a radar training school, herding sailors into cleaned-out stables and even conducting classes in the drained swimming pool. Over the years, it has hosted many dignitaries, including 10 U.S. presidents from Calvin Coolidge to Richard Nixon. In 2017, The Cavalier completed a multi-million-dollar restoration, and today, the hotel takes pride in its rich history as a landmark resort on 18 acres of mid-Atlantic shoreline.
