While in Grand Rapids for work we had the opportunity to stay at the Amway Grand Plaza. It is a beautiful hotel. The rooms were very comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel is walking distance to shops, restaurants & museums. The lobby shops were very nice.

  • Excellent stay

The Amway Grand is a wonderful larger hotel right downtown Grand Rapids Michigan with in walking distance of many great restaurants, shopping and art galleries. The Amway itself has three great restaurants and shopping botiques. One of the restaurants, Cygnus 27, is on the top of the high-rise with great views of the river and city. The hotel also hosts a Wolfgang Puck's and Ruth Chris's Steak House, with a Chop House accross the street. It also hosts several bars not in restaurants. One may choose the modern room high-rise overlooking the river or the 12 sorry historic side called the Pantlind with very large suites overlooking Downtown. This hotel is joined to a theater and large expo center, where one does not need to go out of doors to attend. The hotel is linked via heated, covered walkways to two other hotels and many restaurants...great in winter. This hotel has an indoor pool and hot tub. It has a a Wolfgang Puck's cafe and the main hotel serves breakfast in the main bar area consisting of made to order omlets and eggs. Great night life. Very large banquet rooms, several ballrooms are elegant, one with a double stairway with balcony, great for presentation of bride and groom. During Art Prize this hotel and adjoining expo center, DeVos Place, hosts many types of art. It has also hosted a food and wine pairing event, car shows, boat shows, etc. The DeVos Performance Hall theater is nice with box seats on the side. One can certainly plan a weekend in this hotel and never leave the hotel given the events at the DeVos Place and DeVos Performance Hall, and botiques. The Bell service is formal and phenomenal, especially Fieze (sp?). The Hotel is managed by Hilton. Call the front desk to discern room types. Hilton reservation personnel are usually not in the US and are unaware of room options, sizes, etc. When in Grand Rapids, this is my go-to Hotel.

  • Excellent service, every time

    by Superchief1944 on 2018-08-10 06:18 am

I stay here 4 times a year and it is my "go to" hotel in Grand Rapids. The people are, without exception, excellent at serving the guest: from Dave the Bell Captain at the front door to Fayez a regular bellman in the lobby, to the front desk staff. When it comes to rooms, "the Grand" is really 2 hotels in one: on one side the old "Pantlind" property: traditional rooms, nicely done, ranging in size from massive to tiny. All but the smallest are satisfactory - when you check in tell them you don't want one of the "tiny" rooms. They understand. The other side is the "Tower" - 27 stories, nice modern rooms, river views on 3 sides. They tend to be more expensive but often you can negotiate a move from the Pantlind to the Tower if you're nice and they're not full. On the tower side, avoid rooms on the 4th floor - they look out onto UGLY empty walled concrete patios.
Don't be put off by then appearance of the halls on the Tower side. Someone decided to put in the ugliest, darkest, weirdest wallpaper and carpet. The rooms are excellent though.
In addition to service, the other highlight at the Amway Grand are the restaurants: something for everyone: Wolfgang Puck's Kitchen, Cygnus 27 on the top of the tower, a Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, a Wolfgang Puck casual restaurant for lunch or breakfast, a traditional big breakfast buffet off the main lobby (I MUCH prefer the Wolfgang Puck casual place for wonderful food and value). The great thing here? In the winter, when the weather can be dismal, you can stay here for a couple of days and never have to go outside. On the other hand, when the weather is gorgeous, as it can be be in the spring and summer, you are only a block or two from Rosa Parks Park, Monroe Street, the walk along the river, the bridges over the river, and the Gerald Ford Presidential Library and the Grand Rapids Museum are only 5 minutes across the river, on foot.
The hotel can be expensive and rates seem to go up on every visit. But it is no different than the adjacent JW Marriott (under the same ownership umbrella). There are less expensive options coming to downtown GRR but for a classic, full-service hotel "the Grand" is hard to beat.

  • Elegant and Classy Hotel

Once again a memorable stay and an elegant and classy hotel in downtown Grand Rapids. Excellent dining inside the hotel as well as across the road. Also perfect access to a nearby concert without ever needing to leave a building or skywalk! This is one of my favorite hotels!
