  • Excellent location, great value

by ibeplato on 2019-04-22 12:01 am

Stayed here for several nights recently during a family trip explore San Antonio. The hotel's primary value comes from it's location, right next to The Alamo, and about a block from the Riverwalk. It is also next to a large shopping mall. Being off the river saves a lot in costs, and with the easy walk it really is a better value than paying a premium to be on-river. The hotel is old, but the common areas are very well maintained. The room was showing its age though, with large cracks in the bathtub molding and a bathroom mirror in need of replacement.

The room was very large, though the small TV was difficult to watch from the bed, and not visible from the couch as it was recessed into an ill-fitting cabinet.

Breakfast was very good, with tortillas, eggs, varying meats each day, and a large selection of fruit and cereal. And, of course there was salsa (two different types).

Staff was friendly, and the valet was very quick in retrieving our car when needed. Internet worked fine. Another minor nit is that the hotel doesn't have a fitness center, though they allow guests to use one across the street at The Menger. Unfortunately it is very small and the few machines are old.

Overall we'd definitely stay here again, and I highly recommend the hotel for those on a budget who are primarily looking to explore The Alamo and Riverwalk area.

  • Rattle and humm.....

by RamblingMotorGuy on 2019-04-22 06:10 am

I stayed there for 2 nights for work last week. Room next to the elevator shaft on an upper floor. The room had a constant hum and rattle to it. I'm guessing the electric drives for the lift. My windows jiggled and made rattling noises, I slipped a piece of paper between the glass and glazing to quiet it. The next day after inquiring about the noises, it was noticeably quieter upon return to the room in the evening. I stay here frequently while downtown. It's average at best, nothing exotic. Breakfast gets old being the same thing, make your own breakfast tacos, cereal, fruit, breads and waffles/pancakes. Staff is very nice, top to bottom.

  • Very disappointing

    by Brushman50 on 2019-04-21 05:24 am

I have been staying at this hotel off and on since the 80's. I have seen it decline over the years. It used to be one of our favorite hotels in San Antonio. We stayed here this past summer and did not have a good experience, but I wanted to give it one more chance, but things have gotten worse since then. It is in bad shape from the elevators, public spaces, halls and rooms. All in Desperate need of repairs and updating. We reserved what was advertised as a spacious room with a mini frig. It was tiny with a tiny bathroom with no frig. The room was outdated and carpet was nasty. We had electrical problems so it made me nervous about safety. Only one elevator was working. I love staying in historical buildings because of the charm and uniqueness. I understand they have some limitations. However, I want to feel things are in working order and well maintained. I did not feel that wAy during this stay. The positives were the lady that checked us in, the location (right behind the Alamo), fast response to our issues, and the free breakfast. Please restore this beauty back to its glory days and we will gladly return.

Thank you for being our guest for many years. We NEVER want any guest to go away disappointed. We will share your comments with our entire team. In 2018, we completed a recarpeting of the guest rooms, and continue to do updates around the hotel. We added an new enhanced television system already this year and are continuing to repaint all of our guest rooms. We have some other plans for additional renovations later in 2019, and beyond. It is an ongoing process to care for a 110 year old structure. We did have a door sensor go out on our elevator on Saturday (down for several hours), but our elevator techs were here by mid-day and made the repair. We can provide refrigerators available upon request at no charge. Thank you again for your feedback and we will strive to improve, and hope to have the opportunity to serve you again in the future.

  • Beautiful Hotel, but needs updating

    by DebbieA867 on 2019-04-19 07:57 am

I love the history of this hotel, however, it really needs updating. The rooms and bathrooms are very small. We were on the front of the hotel and it was very noisy. The whole place seemed dark and dank to me. The elevator is tiny. The hotel staff were all very pleasant and helpful though.

Thank you for being our recent guest and for your kind words about our team. We are in a continual mode or updating and upkeep of our 110 year historic hotel. We recently replaced every bed, recarpeted the hotel rooms, enhanced our television system and are repainting every room. We hope to do additional updates later this year and as we go forward. Thank you again for staying with us.

  • A good place to stay.

by kafrhit on 2019-04-16 01:37 pm

This was a very nice hotel. Close to the Alamo and many other attractions. Room was large and very clean. The front desk was very helpful. I would definitely stay there if I ever go back to San Antonio again and would recommend it.
